Maximus stayed quiet throughout, not daring to utter a word.

Having let go of the past, Ashley pat Maximus on the shoulder and said, "What's eating you? That's water under the bridge. Emily, this is mom's old buddy; say hi."

Emily said, "Mom, Maximus, and I already know each other; no need for introductions."

Ashley laughed, "You cheeky monkey."

Maximus forced a smile, "Is it really over?"

Ashley firmly said, "When I say it's over, it's over. So, don’t overthink it."

Maximus glanced at Gracie, "But she hasn't moved on."

Ashley sighed, "Maybe she doesn't want to let go. You need to dig deep and find that resolve you once had, see if it changes anything."

Maximus said, "I can't. It's been years; she's high up there now; I can't just barge in."

Ashley said, "But if you never try, you'll never know. Maximus, neither of you are spring chickens anymore; no time to dilly-dally."

Maximus was torn.
