The way she emphasised the last three words were bone-chilling. Pauline's eyes twitched as they locked together with Gwenda's, who had a sinister smile on her face that caused chills to run down Pauline's spine.

She was no longer the Gwenda Pauline used to know for she had begun to escape her control.

Gazing at her stepdaughter, she said slowly, "Gwenda, I don't know why you would suddenly have such thoughts and ideas. But I'd like to say that I've never faked my love for you. If you're taking out your anger on me because of the matter between Gretchen and Martin, I don't blame you.

I just hope that you can think things through and not be deceived by the words of others. We're still a family, and I will wait for you to come home."

"You went to see Gwenda,"

Gretchen said as she came over to her mother and sat next to her.

Pauline nodded once more. "Yes."

"Mum, did something happen?"
