Gabby, frustrated, took a drag from his cigarette. "Where on earth is our eldest?"

"I have no idea. May's keeping tight-lipped. She only says she'll make Conner pay and wants to keep Annie away from him." Louisa was at a loss. "What if they end up enemies over some guy?"

Annie sat in her room, a photo of her and her sister on the table. May was stunning, an art student with a dancer's grace. She had the elegance of a swan—poised, dignified, and always in the spotlight.

Conner shrugged. "Didn't even go home, came straight to see you. Didn't have time to brush my teeth."

"Where have you been?"

"If I tell you, will you come after me?"

Annie smiled slyly. "Oh, I might."

Conner, looking guilty, said, "I'd betray my brother for you. I was with Asher. Need me to spill his location? I'll tell you everything."
