Teddy scooped Henry out of Asher’s arms with a smooth move and a grin. “Not exactly true. With Andre around, Conner won’t have to start from zero.”

Henry looked up, trying to figure out which refined, important-looking man was holding him now. Was this his other godfather?

Asher wasn’t having it. He reached over to take Henry back. “Sure, maybe things will be easier, but Conner’s still stuck with all of Mr. Nettleton’s baggage. What’s he supposed to do about all that?”

Once again, Henry was passed around, his chubby cheeks and puzzled face making him look even cuter.

Mars strolled over, joining the game. “I’m with Asher on this one. Andre’s world is business. Conner’s is the streets. They shouldn’t get mixed up.” Mars barely had a chance to reach for his godson before Asher nudged him aside. “Come on, I haven’t even had enough time with him. Why does everyone keep trying to steal him from me?”

“Asher, don’t be greedy. You’ve been holding him for ages. We’re all his godfathers—what makes you so special?” Mars said, scooping Henry up.

Henry, ever the cautious one, waited before making any moves. His bright eyes searched for his dad.

Andre had been watching quietly from the side, not interfering.

“Daddy~” Henry called out.

Andre nodded, clearly deep in thought, but still giving his son a little acknowledgement.

Teddy broke the silence. “Conner’s situation isn’t like Asher’s. Asher’s overseas—out there, strength and firepower matter most. But Conner’s here, and he’s already walking a fine line. Forget about Annie for a second. The way things are going in the country these days, Conner’s got two choices: get out early, or leave for good.”

“Mr. Nettleton’s family has been rooted here in Newtown for generations, there’s no way Conner would just pack up and leave. Even if he does try to go legit, it’s a process.”

Mars pressed his lips together, silent, and Asher just sat there, thinking. Even if he had his own freedom, his friend didn’t. And when it came to the situation at home, only those two really had a say.
