Naomi ended up with a plane ticket in her hand before she even knew what was happening. Bruce was the one packing her bags—most folks either did it themselves or had their daughters help, but in Naomi’s house, it was her husband bustling around, folding shirts and stuffing toiletries into zippered pouches.
“Naomi, I have no idea what you’ll need,” Bruce said, holding up a couple of her favorite tops. “Just the usual, I guess. If it’s not the right season, buy something new when you get there. Go have fun. And when you’re ready to come home, call me—I’ll be there in a flash.”
Naomi was still a little numb with surprise as Bruce, their son, and her future daughter-in-law whisked her off to the airport.
Meanwhile, Kendrick was at the terminal with Coleen, giving her a gentle but firm pep talk. “You’re going on vacation, so stop worrying about work. Let Molly take the reins. It’s her turn to either sink or swim.”
Molly just rolled her eyes and kept quiet.
Madison, meanwhile, was busy showering her little grandson with kisses. “Henry, Grandma’s bringing you a present, okay?”
Henry, lips sticky and sweet, nodded eagerly. “Okay, Grandma! I want a present!”
Once the three ladies were all together, Naomi was greeted with warm hugs. “Naomi, you made it!”
Anya hurried over, phone still in hand, explaining, “Aunt Naomi, first you’ll fly to West Meadows, meet up with my mom at my place, and then all of you will catch the international flight together.” Mrs. Calder was already on her way.
“Promise me you’ll all look out for each other, okay?” Anya said, a little anxious but excited for them.
Mr. Calder stood nearby, holding their son and reassuring his wife, “Don’t worry. Go have the time of your life with the little one. I’ll handle things at home with Ash. Been doing this dad thing for over twenty years—the princess turned out just fine, didn’t she? As for our boy, as long as he’s got food, he’ll be just fine.”
Mrs. Calder wanted to take her son along, but Mr. Calder shook his head. “Leave him here. This is your trip. No little shadows tagging along.”
So James stayed home with his dad.
Once everyone was at the airport, Mr. Calder lingered with his wife in the car for a couple of hours, savoring those last moments. He didn’t leave until he saw the women’s plane land and the four of them reuniting in the arrivals hall. He watched as they disappeared through the international gates, then finally scooped up his son and headed home.
