Leo trained until eight o’clock at night. Even with the air conditioning on in the gym, he collapsed on the floor, drenched in sweat, feeling as if someone had taken a hammer to his bones.
Chad, for all his tough talk, took an hour off when evening rolled around, heading to the hospital to visit his girl.
The Cedillo’s had come by in the afternoon. Naomi had wanted to stay but when Coleen appeared, she knew a mother’s presence was preferred. And so, Naomi left.
Chad sat by the bed, holding Molly’s hand with the IV drop in it. “How many bags of fluid have they given you today?”
“Four. Chad, can you stay tonight?”
“No.” Chad knew what she was about to ask before she even said it. She wanted him to stay with her.
Molly withdrew her hand, angry that Chad wouldn’t stay.
Chad looked down at his empty palm, and then back at her. “Don’t get on my bad side, Molly. Andre had to punish Mia yesterday. Don’t make me do the same to you.”
He threatened her, but also left his hand open, waiting for her to return her hand to his. Molly was smart. She knew what he wanted. Frustrated, Molly returned her hand to Chad’s.
Chad gripped her soft hand, feeling as if he was holding his own heart.
Coleen felt a little unwell from recent stress and told Chad, “Stay with Molly for a while. I’ll be back in half an hour.”
She left, taking Grandma Aubree with her.
Now alone, Chad moved closer to Molly’s bed. Molly looked up at him. Her heart was pounding. “Chad, I really like you.”
Chad laughed. “So you don’t love me anymore? You just like me?”
Molly couldn’t look into Chad’s eyes for too long. She was afraid she’d lose herself. “No, I love you too.”
Chad commanded, “Remove the ‘too’, and say it again.”
Molly blushed and tried to avoid Chad’s gaze. “You say it first.”
Chad chuckle. “It’s you who loves me.”
Molly’s face turned redder. She mumbled, “I love you.”
Chad looked at her, pleased. “I love you too.”
In the evening, the nurse didn’t come by. But Chad still kept a distance from Molly, fearing he might make a mistake and scare her.
“Stay with me tonight if you love me.”
“Why do you need me here?”
Donnie looked at the captive Finley. “Not a word.”
Chad asked, “Did Brian come through for questioning?”
“On the way back.”
Chad reassured Donnie, “Don’t worry. I’ll handle it.”
Since the police had captured Finley, Bruce had been meeting with higher-ups. He’d warned Finley not to cross him, and now that he had him, he wouldn’t let him go.
He and Chad had a common goal. So, when someone tried to undermine Chad, Bruce was there to back him up. His father wasn’t one to be trifled with.
In the realm of public opinion, if anyone dared to threaten him by rallying the masses, they were simply biting off more than they could chew! Who’d dare stir the pot in Andre’s turf? That was a one-way ticket to disaster!
Now, his top priority was to crack the case as soon as possible.
Chad wouldn’t dare waste a minute.
As night falls, some places had turned off their lights, tucked into dreams; yet, some places were still with the glow of the night, as if waiting for someone.
Mia checked her phone countless times throughout the evening. Lying in bed, she stared at the screen. Her lips were quivering as she fought back tears. “So you really don’t care about me anymore. Is that it?”
