After Molly finished her nightly routine, she perched on the edge of her bed, camera in hand, turning on the light to inspect her face in the screen. “Chad, this is all your fault. I haven’t been getting any rest these past few days, and now I’ve got bags under my eyes.” She complained, tugging lightly at her lower eyelids as she scrutinized her reflection.

Chad, who was at the foot of the bed stripping off his shirt, ready to climb into bed himself, replied, “I’ve been pulling all-nighters without getting any bags. How come you’ve got them after just two days?”

Molly set her phone aside, casting a glance at Chad, who was now bare-chested. “That’s because your skin’s too thick for bags to show up,” she retorted.

Chad just laughed, proceeding to unbuckle his belt, about to slide off his jeans.

Molly immediately pointed at him, “Don’t you dare strip! Sleep with your clothes on.”

Chad froze, mistaking Molly’s insistence as a bout of shyness at their shared vulnerability.

Jade revealed her reasoning, “In case we’ve got any centipedes or snakes showing up tonight, you’ll be able to run faster if you’re wearing pants while holding me.”

Chad chuckled, “No running tonight. If they come, I’ll catch them for you.”

The thought of Chad catching bugs sent shivers down Molly’s spine.

Since they didn’t have any change of clothes at their old family home, Molly ended up sleeping in her hoodie and jeans, which was far from comfortable.

Chad’s hand rested on Molly’s waist, “It’s more comfortable to sleep without clothes.”

Molly shook her head, “I need to be ready to run.”

Chad reassured her, “What’s there to fear when I’m here?”

Eventually, Molly gave in. Sleeping fully clothed was too hot, but the thought of bugs crawling on her if she didn’t cover up was even more unsettling.

Chad guided her, “Take off your clothes and get under the covers. The bugs won’t get you then.”

Reluctantly, Molly sat up in the dark, raised her arms, and slipped off her hoodie, revealing her smooth skin in the moonlit room.

Under the moon’s soft glow, Chad could see her clearly, his hand gently resting on her back.

Molly whispered, “Keep your hands to yourself.”

She took off her clothes and tossed them at the foot of the bed before lying down again. The bed was so small she could feel Chad’s warm skin against hers.

She turned away from him.

Chad suggested, “Get closer. Don’t leave any gap in between us in the blanket.”

Molly remained silent.

“Snakes are active this season, and they’re everywhere, especially around old homes. Imagine if one decides to slither into our blanket through a gap…”

Molly immediately turned over and snuggled into Chad’s arms. “Say one more word, and I’m sleeping in the car.”

Chad, feeling the warmth of Molly so close, found his desires stirring but remembered her warning glance.

Molly, sensing the shift in Chad’s mood, blushed, her cheeks glowing in the moonlight, “Tonight, you better keep it together, or I’m heading to sleep with Mom, and you can bunk with Dad!”

Just then, their peaceful moment was interrupted by Coleen knocking. “Molly, are you asleep yet?”

Chad, joining Molly, teased, “Waking up at eleven?”

Molly nodded, “Mom’s been on my case for nearly an hour.”

Seeing her barely touched breakfast, Chad offered, “Have a little now. I brought back your favorite, a big plate of fried chicken for lunch.”

Molly, looking at her half-finished bowl of oatmeal, “I have to finish it, or Mom will say I’m wasting food.”

Chad took the bowl from Molly, finishing off the oatmeal for her.

With the family decision to move back to the city, Grandma Aubree and Grandpa Elmer began packing in the afternoon.

Coleen and Kendrick, spending the day fostering good relations with the neighbors, left Molly curious, “Mom, if we’re moving, why are you visiting so many people like we’re saying goodbye?”

Coleen leaned in, a twinkle in her eye as if she was about to share the secret to the universe. “You see, love, that’s what you might not understand yet. Keeping in touch with our folks back home, our neighbors, our friends, it’s like having eyes and ears when we’re not around. Take Juliana’s situation, for instance. If they hadn’t told us, we’d be none the wiser. This place, it’s where your grandparents planted their roots, where your dad grew up. We can’t just up and leave, never to return.”

Molly nodded, soaking in another life lesson from her mother.

After a whirlwind two days of packing and preparing, by six o’clock, the family was ready to set off.

A good number of folks came out to bid Grandma Aubree and Grandpa Elmer goodbye, making the Byrne family promise, “When little Molly’s baby arrives, make sure you come back and tell us all, okay? We’ll all want to come see Molly’s bundle of joy.”

The Byrnes all laughed and agreed, “Of course, any good news and we’ll be back to share it with everyone.”

Molly whispered to Chad, a mischievous glint in her eyes, “Did you see that, Chad? The whole village knows we’re going to be parents. You think if I bring Henry back tomorrow, they’ll start saying he’s the baby we had last year?”
