"Director Nancy, that kid whose surgery we just completed is in a lot of pain. May I administer some painkillers?" Erin came in and asked urgently.

"I'll take a look at her first." Nancy had just performed surgery on a child who had broken legs from a car accident, and had to be operated on twice.

They used the local anesthetic during such surgeries for children. Unfortunately, the effect of the anesthetic had subsided, so he was feeling painful again.

"You can go, Nancy," said Doris.

"So, Doris, make sure you help yourself to some desensitizer. Take good care of your body!" Nancy said firmly, expressing her concern.

"Understood." Doris sounded lazy and uninterested.

As soon as Nancy left her, Doris went to the bathroom to use the mirror. She scrutinized her face and felt sorry that the rash would disappear soon.

She wanted to get back at Jay once and for all.

She thought remorselessly, 'He deserves to be dealt with.

He must pay for cheating on me!'

With fresh resolve, Doris walked out of Nancy's office, leaving the desensitizer behind.

"Doris?"

She heard someone call her.

Having graduated from medical school, she figured that she could easily run into her former classmates in hospitals. She, thus, didn't give much thought to whoever was calling her. But when she casually looked back and came face to face with Owen Yue, she suddenly blushed pink.

Owen Yue was her crush back then at the university, and she had written him dozens of love letters.

Love letters for which she never got replies.

She chided herself for her childishness in those days.

"Wow, Owen, you- you work in this hospital?" Doris managed to ask, feeling embarrassed.

"Yes, I do. I didn't qualify for the master degree, so I found my way here. How about you?" Owen ran his eyes up and down her body, "Do you work here too?"

Doris shook her head hastily, "No, I don't. I came to see a doctor."

"Oh. Are you alright?" Owen Yue asked tenderly, looking concerned.

Doris's heart skipped when the man whom she used admire showed genuine concern. She quickly turned her head sideways and asked, "Look at my face. Does it look like I'm suffering from that disease?"

"What disease?"

"AIDS," Doris replied.

Owen's face lit up with a smile. "Of course not! That's most likely just an allergic reaction. All you need to clear it up is to use a desensitizer."

What a shame! It was too easy to decipher that she was not that sick.

She bit her lower lip and tried to think. "Owen," she started, "I need your help. I'm with a very horrible man at the moment, and it has been practically impossible to break free of him. I've tried everything! I want to scare him away by telling him I have AIDS.'¹

She paused for a moment and considered the fact that Owen Yue might work in the Department of Clinical Laboratory, being a major in Clinical Medicine. She explained further, "Okay, so to be honest, I'm suffering from an allergic reaction. However, I initiated it to make it look like I have AIDS since the allergy is a believable symptom. People are scared of the disease and will stay away from me if they believe I have it, and so will that terrible man I got myself entangled with. If you can help me by giving me a written test report, I'll show it to him as proof, and he'll begin to avoid me. What do you think about that?"

"What do I think? Are you serious? Just tell me who he is, and I'll take care of him with a good beating," Owen Yue answered, refusing to help her.

"But we aren't barbarians. Beating him up will be illegal, and you could get into trouble. Just give me that test report; it's all I need," Doris pleaded profusely.

"Are you serious about this?"

"I'm as serious as a heart attack."

His pupils shrank as he read the report. He suddenly raised his head and looked at her.

"Doris, Doris, what exactly are you playing at? Do you want to tell me how you got this disease? Perhaps it was through the man you met at the bar last night?" Doris was confused at his reactions. 'This crazy guy! What's he insinuating now?'

"How am I supposed to know who infected me? The fact is that I have the disease."

"So, tell me, Doris, have you infected me yet?" Clenching his teeth defiantly, Jay pulled her to himself and held her tight

It was the last thing Doris expected. She had thought that the minute Jay read the test report, he'd take to his heels and stay far away from her.

Unfortunately, it didn't look like things were going to go as she planned.

"I don't know if I've infected you yet, but you must go for a check-up very soon. I want you to stay away from now on. I also hope that you can keep this between us. I don't want anyone else to find out." She managed to release two drops of tears as she spoke and sniffed.

Jay's eyes were lit with mockery. He was unruffled as he thought, 'What an actress!

Is she trying to get me scared?

What does she take me for, a fool?'

Jay bent over and gently kissed away her tears. He looked straight at her and said, "Doris, listen real good. Your sickness does not change anything between us. I'll die with you!"

Doris's eyes widened.

'Unbelievable!' she thought. 'How can someone so heartless say something so sweet?'

Doris refused to accept it. She shook her head hard. "Never, Jay! I don't want you to die with me. You have a family, and your friends. They'll be sad if you die. You don't want to make them sad, do you?"
