Off in the study, Charles was reading documents. Occasionally, he looked up and admired a photo of Nancy when she was young.

He found himself doing this often when he missed her.

"Daddy..." Bobby called out tentatively. It was obvious to Charles that Bobby felt aggrieved as he entered the room.

"What's wrong? Did you get into another argument with Grandma?" Charles asked this half-jokingly, knowing both his son and mother and their tendency to butt heads.

"I certainly don't WANT to keep arguing with Grandma!" Bobby whined and climbed into Charles' lap.

"Well, what has you upset this time?” Even as he asked, he had already guessed part of it. He missed Nancy also, but unlike the boy, he was very busy recently. He was able to message Nancy, but the woman never replied! Wasn't she too stingy?

In fact, Nancy had thought long and hard before deciding to ignore Charles.

She was scared of him, really, truly scared.

She was both afraid that she would be fall for Charles and that Charles might leave her after finding out what she had been through.

She thought it better to end things before they could even begin.

Thus, she ignored his messages. However, she had read them over and over to herself, missing him as much as he missed her.

Bobby put his chubby arms around Charles' neck and leaned his mouth against his father's ear, and said, "Daddy, I miss Mommy so much. What do I do?"

Charles rubbed his chin, sighing inside since he also missed her.

"Bobby, I think we have to find ways to make your mommy miss us too, so that she will come visit." Charles' advice was vague but kind.

Bobby's big eyes blinked and he asked excitedly, "Daddy, what can we do to make Mommy miss us? Why doesn't she already? Am I not cute? Am I not well behaved? Does Mommy not like me?”

He asked his questions rapid fire in a fit of selfconsciousness and Charles couldn't keep up.

Bobby must have had an idea, otherwise he wouldn't have brought up his birthday.

Bobby was such a bright child, with so many ideas!

Blinking his eyes, Bobby tilted his head and said in a serious tone, "I'm going to tell Mommy it's your birthday and she has to come to celebrate. Mommy is too good to say no to a birthday!"

Charles didn't say anything. It might not make her miss them, but it wasn't a bad excuse to invite her around.

"If you say nothing, it's just tacit consent, right?"

Bobby said this out loud but did not expect a response.

He stretched out his little finger and slowly typed a message, "Mommy, Daddy's birthday is the day after tomorrow. You are invited to attend the birthday party. Mommy, please come. Thank you. Bobby."

Looking at the message, Nancy thought of Bobby's lovely little face and had to catch a tear as it rolled down her face at the thought.

She didn't want to disappoint that angel by turning down his invitation.

Charles' lips curved up; he would get to see Nancy in person instead of just a photograph. How could he not be happy?
