Chapter 221
‘So you aren’t going to say anything… at all?” I pressed.
“Elowen, what do you want me to say? It’s your choice, and you’ve made it; nothing I say would change that. Her voice was flat, devoid of the passion I’d come to expect from her whenever Kaius was involved.
“Okay then.” I stood, somehow more unsettled by her calm acceptance than I would have been by her rage. “I’ll escort you.”
“There won’t be any need for that. I know my way around.” She gathered her things, her movements efficient and deliberate.
“I know that, mother, wasn’t it clear that I just needed to spend a few more minutes with you?” I couldn’t keep the hurt from my voice.
She paused, her back still to me. “Like you care.”
The bitterness in those two words made me flinch. When she turned to face me, the careful mask of indifference had slipped, revealing raw disappointment and a bone–deep weariness.
“I know what you want to hear; you want me to get angry at you for breaking off the marriage–the one good thing life has ever offered you; you want me to scream at you for going back to ‘him‘ after everything, but I won’t do that, and you know why?– because I am tired.” The words tumbled out, gaining momentum with each syllable. “I am so sick and tired of you, and I am only tolerating you because you are my daughter and I have no choice, but I would say this to your face: you are messed up. I thought I had been naive and stupid in my past, but you are so much worse. I was at least wise enough to run away, but you ran right back
into his arms.”
“I didn’t run back into his arms.” The protest sounded weak even to my own ears.
“Oh, you didn’t?” Her laugh was brittle. “When Kieran informed me you led the soldiers who came here,” she continued, her eyes boring into mine, “I knew you were only willing to lead them here because you needed an excuse to get back with him. I knew also that you would cut things off just as soon as he let you back into his pack.”
“That’s not true. I wasn’t here to get back with Kaius…” But hadn’t some part of me known exactly what w to Ravenhollow? Hadn’t I secretly hoped, deep down, that somehow I’d end up exactly where I was now?
happen if I returned
“You know what? I don’t want to hear it. I am tired of fighting for you, trying to defend you, and I’ve done my best. You are no longer a child, and it’s time you make your own decisions. If this is what you want, then fine. I had chosen to focus on my own wants. It’s time I too act selfish. I want a life, I want to be loved, and..she hesitated momentarily, “I had held back because of you, and now I won’t anymore. Bye Elowen, and the next time we meet it would be at the wedding ceremony–that’s if you still wish to
be there.”
“I will be there.” It was all I could manage as she swept from the room, the door closing behind her with a quiet click that somehow felt more final than a slam.
Frost, wo had been silently observing the exchange from the corner moved to my side. “Elowen, are you okay?”
“Yes, I am.” The lie came automatically.
His ice–blue eyes studied me with too much understanding. “Earlier, thought you wanted me here because you couldn’t stand her judgemental comments, but now, it seems like you wanted to hear them.”
The observation caught me off guard with its accuracy. “I… I thought I wasn’t prepared to face her; I didn’t want to see the disappointment on her face when she looked at me. You see, a lot happened in the past few months; she saw me at my weakest, and she might have believed I would move on from Kaius. I failed her, and she has every right to be mad at me, but somehow, this feels even worse. It feels like she has given up on me.”

Chapter 221
“You will be alright, Frost said, his voice gentle. “And I don’t think you are stupid; I just think you are in love.”
“With Kaius, it’s just so hard; I am always forced into choosing between him or my mother.” I sank onto the edge of the bed, suddenly exhausted.
“Your mother had always looked out for you; she didn’t want you hurt. Kaius might be a difficult person, but I know one thing for sure, and that is, he is obsessively in love with you.”
Frost suddenly straightened, his eyes widening. “Shit, I almost forgot Kaius asked me to check on your wounds and remove the stitches. He’d have my head if I left without doing it.”
I nodded, shifting on the bed to allow him better access. As he gathered his medical supplies from the bag he always carried, I lifted my shirt just enough to reveal the long, neat incision where the sorceress had extracted the demon.
“The wound has practically disappeared,” Frost murmured, his ice–blue eyes widening slightly as his fingers gently probed the area. “Your healing abilities are… remarkable.”
“Is that a good thing?” I asked, watching his face as he worked.
“Definitely. Most werewolves heal faster than humans, but this-” he traced the thin pink line that was all that remained of what had been a serious surgical wound “-this is beyond normal werewolf healing. The Turned One abilities are impressive.”
He opened a small kit containing scissors, tweezers, and antiseptic. With practiced precision, he began snipping the stitches one by one, his touch so gentle I barely felt it.
“Does that hurt?” he asked, pausing when I flinched slightly.
