“There had been so much happening, and it kind of skipped my mind I thought Elowen told you about it. His eyes narrowed, studying my reaction. “Kaius, are you… jealous?”
“Shut up,” I turned away, not wanting him to see the truth in my expression.
Frost’s laughter filled the room, only fueling my annoyance. “Yeah, laugh it all out, Frost, and when you are done, go join the patrolling soldiers; you will spend your night there.”
The threat was petty, but it silenced his laughter, though his smirk remained firmly in place as he departed. Once alone, I moved to the window, staring out at the night–shrouded pack grounds. Elower had been gone for hours now. Where could she have gone? And what was she hiding?
With a sigh, I headed for our chambers, hoping she might have returned while I was occupied with Frost. The room was empty, but something caught my eye on the desk a sheet of paper with strange markings, as if someone had tried to write something but couldn’t form the letters properly. I picked it up, studying the erratic pattern, a sense of unease growing within me.
–
Something was very wrong here. And I was determined to find out what.
Elowen
When I slipped through our bedroom window, I was surprised to find Kaius already there, sitting at the desk with a familiar piece of paper in his hands – the one where I’d tried and failed to write a warning about Thalia
“Welcome back, Elowen,” he said without turning, his voice carefully neutral.
“There’s nothing of importance on that paper,” I said quickly, my heart racing.
“Then what is this?” He finally looked up, holding the paper with its erratic marks.
“It’s nothing.” I moved to take it from him, but he held it just out of reach.
“I returned back here to find you and of course apologize to you for what I did, but then I discovered you were gone; all I could find was this. I couldn’t understand what you were trying to write down, and as crazy as it may seem, I thought it had a deeper meaning, so I spent hours staring at it, trying to figure out what it meant…” His amber eyes searched mine, looking for answers I couldn’t give.
“I’m sorry,” I said softly, my earlier resolve wavering under his intense gaze. “I just… needed some time away; I should have told you before I left, and I’m sorry I didn’t.”
“Is that all it had been about?” The doubt in his voice was clear, but couldn’t tell him the truth even if I wanted to.
“Yes, that was t.” I tried to make the lie sound convincing, though guilt gnawed at me.
Kaius stood, moving closer until I could feel the warmth radiating from him. “I should have never tempered with your mind; it was wrong of me. Please forgive me, Elowen, and unless you request it, I would never do that to you again…”
His sincerity made the deception even worse. He was apologizing while I was hiding something far more dangerous.
