“He is the best thing that ever happened to me,” Charlie retorted, pulling her arm back.

Luke’s jaw clenched. He wanted to say something but held back. Eventually, he muttered, “The truth is, I broke up with you because my father never liked you. You weren’t good enough for me. Regina? She’s more suited for me. I was having doubts before, but from now on, I’ll take my relationship with Regina more seriously.”

“Perfect, then,” Charlie said. “That’s all settled. I’m happy for you.”

“Regina’s family is well-connected and wealthy,” Luke added unnecessarily.

“Great for you,” Charlie said flatly, looking over his shoulder. “Can I go now?”

Just as Charlie walked past him, Luke sneered, “Regina is friends with someone from the Wrights in Braeton. She can connect me with a sports management agency partly owned by Carlos Ronaldo. Yeah, that’s right, the famous tennis player? I don’t even need a scout because Regina might land me a direct contract.”

“And Taylor? It doesn’t matter if he wins the championship. This world is all about connections! You can be proud of him now, but let’s face it—he’ll never be as successful as me!”

Yeah, of course, Charlie knew Carlos Ronaldo. She also knew that Carlos Ronaldo married into the Wright family of Braeton City. Carlos was one of the best tennis players who was in the spotlight for years, but that fact did not bother her at all.

Charlie turned to Luke, smiling. She said, “Yeah? Keep telling yourself that. Let’s see who really becomes more successful; a guy who uses connections to get to the top or a man like Taylor, who actually uses his talent.”

She turned on her heel and walked away, leaving Luke fuming.

Since it was Friday, Taylor’s team decided to have dinner at Titan’s Lounge after practice. They had food and drinks, and while Charlie wasn’t good at handling alcohol, she accepted a beer from Taylor to be a good sport.

“Are you sure you drink?” Taylor asked.

“Yeah, yeah. I drink a little,” Charlie said, smiling in her seat. “One or two is enough.”

Sadly, after two bottles, Charlie was already feeling drunk. Her face was red, and she started talking carelessly.

“You know what, babe? Luke approached me earlier,” Charlie mumbled. “He said he’d be more successful than you. He thinks he’s got the right connections. Ha!”
