Chapter 248 novel The Beta's Regret (Eden and Eros)

(Eden’s Pov)

I woke up to sunlight filtering into the tent. For a moment, I was in a haze as figures hovered over me.

Their shapes were blurry, but their presence was strong enough to tell me who they were.

As my sight became better, the first person I saw clearly was my mother. Tears rolled down her face as she blew her nose noisily into a handkerchief. My father stood beside her with a frown etched into his face. Beauty and Adonis were positioned next to them, their faces wearing worry lines.

A chill rocked me.

I know the agony on their face was beyond my fainting spell. If anything, it was a confirmation of what I feared the most.

Still, I wanted to know the truth, to hear from their lips once more that it is exactly what they said before.

“Eros.” I started softly. “Is he really gone?” the last part came out in a whisper. I gripped the side of the dress waiting for an answer…

“Yes.” Adonis finally squeaked out. “Eros is dead.”

The world literally spun. My heart stopped, and my breath seized for a moment. Suddenly everything became too hard to bear.

I just couldn't wrap my head around the fact that Eros is dead. How is that even possible?

I screamed for it to be a lie, but deep down, I knew it wasn't.

How could this happen?

My hands shook. I almost tore off my dress in my desire to run far away from this reality. I tried hard to hold myself together so I wouldn't completely fall apart.

But I was completely swallowed by the grief. It was almost as if I could no longer reason. I had a great urge to scream, to rip the world into pieces, but all that came out was a strangled sob as tears began to drop from my eyes.

A floodgate was suddenly opened. I wailed uncontrollably.

We all cried now.

My wolf, Tiara was silent. Her grief was too great to be expressed. She was still in denial that her mate was no more. She should have known, or at least felt something, but she didn't.

How possible was that? It was almost as if I couldn't feel him.

I knew my father  meant well, and he was playing his fatherly role well, but his words didn't bring sudden ease to my heart like I would wish.

A young man suddenly entered the tent. He greeted everyone, and turned to me “My lady, the people wish to see you.”

I wiped my face and looked at him with a frown. “The people?”

He nodded, “Yes.”

I looked at my father and Adonis. They both gave me encouraging nods. Beauty helped me out of bed, and made sure I looked presentable before nudging at me to follow the young man outside.

My body felt numb, my movements slow.

As I stepped outside, I was faced with silence and a feeling of reverence hit me.

My eyes widened in shock when the people, in different groups, knelt down and chanted in one breath.

“Lead us! Queen Eden!”
