Chapter 55
Stay Away
Veronica’s POV
“Veronica.”
My grip on the phone tightened. The last thing I expected was for Carter to actually call me.
“I need your help, please. Don’t hang up, I beg of you. You’re the only person I can turn to now, please,” he pleaded desperately.
“What makes you think I care?” The way my voice went ice–cold, you would never believe I was considering helping him minutes ago.
“Please, if not anything else but for the good times we shared. Please don’t turn your back on me…”
“You know you have guts, Carter Calling me to talk about good times like there were any. Let’s say I actually want to consider that, can you mention one good time I shared with you, huh?” I demanded and the line
went silent.
I let out a bitter chuckle, “I didn’t think so too. Whatever happens to you is absolutely none of my business so do not even think of bothering me again!”
“Veronica, please, I beg of you. Help me, please. I know I don’t deserve it but please save me. She’s trying to blackmail me into marrying her and the one thing that could have proven my innocence is gone, please baby, help
I beg of you…” his voice cracked.
me…
“That is quite touching. Now if you’d excuse me, I have a meeting to attend to. Enjoy your blissful stay in jail!” I stated then hung up.
The urge to help him was long gone already. Every time I heard his voice, it made me even more angrier and even now I was trying to move on, he wouldn’t leave me the fuck alone.
Yet every time I wanted to stay mad, the thought of grandfather softened. my heart. That man had been there for me through the worse. It didn’t seem right to just abandon him to die of heartache.
So I packed up my things and went to see my father. At home, I met him. fixing some fresh flowers in the vases. I took a minute to lean against the pillars, watching him hold the flowers so carefully like they were glass.
“Father,” I began and he turned to me a bright smile.
“You’re back. How was your day? Trust you didn’t have any problems,” he asked and I shook my head.
“Of course not, father. Your employees are lovely,” I told him. Then paused for a few seconds before speaking up again, “I need a favor.”
He fixed the flowers and turned to me with rapt attention. “What kind of favor?”
“It’s about Carter,” I said quickly, before I lost my nerve. “He’s in trouble. Meghan set him up, and now my grandfather–in–law’s health ist deteriorating because of the stress.”
My father’s expression didn’t change, but his jaw tightened slightly. “You mean ex grandfather–in–law. So what do you propose I do about it?”
“You have influence. Connections. If we can uncover evidence or apply some pressure, we might be able to clear his name…” I stopped to catch my breath as his eyes remained on me, unimpressed.
Chapter 54
He leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers as he studied me. “And why would I waste my resources on that man? The same man who
humiliated you and threw you away for someone like… what was her name again?”
“It’s not for him,” I said firmly. “It’s for Grandfather. That man has shown me love even before I officially became a part of his family. He loves me so much and would do anything for me. He is very fragile, Father. If this continues, it could kill him.”
He didn’t respond immediately, his piercing gaze assessing me. Finally, he sighed. “You’re too soft, Veronica. Always trying to fix what’s
broken.”
“I’m not doing this for Carter,” I repeated. “Just… please, Father. Do it for his grandfather.”
“Well I don’t know his grandfather, do I?” He huffed coldly.
“He is Orthon’s father,” I stated and his expression softened for just a second. “Are you going to turn your back on him too? He called me and he sounded so devastated. His nephew is driving him crazy!”
“I don’t like the fact that you are trying to convince me to help someone who hurt you. If he got into trouble, he should sort himself out. You don’t owe him anything,” he muttered.
“I know, father, but please do this for Orthon,” I pleaded.
“Fine! But don’t expect miracles okay? If Carter’s stupidity got him to this, I am not going to go all out for him for any reason. Even if he is related to my dead father!” He stated and I tried not to laugh.
“Of course, father,” I smiled.
