Chapter 20: Charlotte’s POV

I hear Claire arrive and go upstairs. A few minutes later I hear the shower turn on in the guest bedroom but I don’t hear Leo come in. Had Leo finally left the peasant?

I look around the house in my wheelchair and see no signs of Leo’s arrival. He hadn’t come back yet. I wait for Claire to come downstairs so that I could ask where he was but she stayed upstairs tucked in her room. I expected as much.

About an hour later, I hear the front door open gently and close. I peak around the corner from my room and see Leo come in and watch as Claire

rushes down the stairs as he turns around.

Is that blood?

I watch as Claire leads Leo upstairs and they disappear out of sight. Something didn’t seem right. Leo was never a man to sulk. He always walked with his head held high – displaying his obvious success and dominance. What has Claire do to him?

I will make sure she pays for what she’s done to my love.

I hear them come back downstairs and peek in the kitchen where I see Claire icing Leo’s face. I hate the way they looked at each other. I watch closely as Leo seems to enjoy her care and touch. I try to ease drop on their conversation but am only able to catch their facial expressions and I don’t like what I’m seeing. Leo still loves this useless woman.

I silently roll my wheelchair back to my room and wait a moment before calling Claire to my side. I didn’t actually need her help but I couldn’t stand the thought of her being near my Leo any longer.

Leo would’ve never let her go knowing she was holding his child. I have to fix this fast – before Leo finds out or worse, before she finds the courage and tells him herself.

“Thank you, Claire. That’s all for tonight.” I need her to leave so I can plan my next move carefully.

“You’re welcome. Have a good night, Charlotte.” She leaves the room quietly and closes the door behind her.

Now that I know she’s pregnant, I’ll have to act fast. Leo cannot know what I know. I’ve worked too hard to leave empty–handed. Leo was mine and he will always be mine.
