Chapter 25: Claire’s POV

I calm my sobbing and try to make sense of everything that has happened. I was kidnapped. I fell down four flights of stairs and I was pushed on purpose. Whoever hired that man wanted my baby dead and they succeeded.

Could Charlotte have noticed and done this to drive a wedge between Leo and I?

Why would someone do this?

I lay there, staring out the window and Jordan sits there silently. He passes glances my way to make sure I’m alright as I ignore every one of them. I was grateful to Jordan in that moment but I had lost everything and there was nothing he could do.

I hear the door creak open carefully, knowing it’s not the doctor and I see Jordan look up sadly. He slowly gets up to leave.

“I’ll give you two the room. I’ll be right down the hall, Claire. Call me if you need anything.” He gives my hand a squeeze and I watch as he nods at Leo passing him silently. Leo gives him a nod and walks over to my side.

“Claire?” He asks carefully as he sits down on the bed next to me. He gently touches my face as tears stream down my cheeks.

“Claire, please tell me what happened?” He lols heart–broken by my condition alone.

“It’s doesn’t matter now.” I say in a dead–pan voice.

“What do you mean? Of course, it does. Look at you. You’re hurt.” He was wrong. I was hurting which was far worse than my physical injuries.

“I’m okay.” I lied. I felt numb. I felt broken and I looked horrible.

“You are not okay. Had the doctor came in to see you? I can call them in right now.” He goes to get up but I grab his hand bringing back to sitting.

“The doctor already came in.” I let go as soon as he sits down and he grabs my hand again.

“Claire, what happened? I’m worried. Jordan called and said you had been in an accident.” I begin crying at the words. This was no accident.

“I wanted to go to Jasmine’s and I saw your note so I gave the driver the address. I fell asleep in the back as he drove and when I woke up, we were in the warehouse district and it wasn’t your driver.” I begin sobbing as I recount what had happened to me.
“Who was it? What did they do to you?” He was shaking in anger. I swallowed the lump in my throat as I continue.

“He had a gun and told me to walk up the tower stairs and he threw me down once I had reached the top.”

“Why? Why would someone do this?” Leo was enraged and I couldn’t contain it any longer.

“Because I was pregnant!” I lose it and begin crying in agony.

Leo looks distressed. He looks at me in shock and

pulls me into a hug.

“He knew that I was pregnant – I begged him! And he killed my baby!” I sobbed uncontrollably as Leo held me.

“Claire, why wouldn’t you tell me?” I hear him ask sadly.

“Tell you what? You didn’t want kids and they did this to me for you!” I push him away.

“Claire, I’m so sorry. If I had known, I would’ve been there to protect you.”

“Protect me from what? They killed my baby! They killed my son!” I cover my face as I shook and cried.

“Claire, this is all my fault. I should have been there. I should have known. They’ll pay for what they’ve done. I promise you.” He tries to console me.
“I just want to go home.”
