"I'm not mad!"
She was just overwhelmed.
Ronald had been waiting to hear those words: "Kari, I'm sorry about yesterday. I startled you. How about I cook you a spicy lobster dinner tonight? You've been wanting to try it for ages, and I've been learning how to make it just for you."
Kari hadn't thought much of it before, but now it seemed his kindness was too much.
"Isn't your company really busy?"
How did he have time to come over every day?
"There's always time for dinner." Ronald noticed Kari seemed to be pushing him away, and felt he might be rushing things: "If you don't want to see me, I won't come tomorrow."
"Ronald, this is your home. You can come over whenever you want."
Willa said eagerly.
Kari got a stern look from Willa, felt sulky, and thought Ronald was doing it on purpose. He knew she was avoiding him but still pointed it out!
"Kari, you and Ronald grew up together. What can't you get past? Stop it, okay?"
Kari just hummed in response, her breakfast tasteless.
After breakfast, Kari grabbed her bag and left.
Ronald immediately followed.
"Kari."
Kari, still sulky, walked faster.
Ronald caught up and grabbed her arm: "Kari, are you avoiding me?"
"You know exactly why I'm avoiding you—" Kari's cheeks were flushed!
Ronald let go, a look of disappointment in his eyes.
"I... I like you. Is that so hard to accept? Or do you really dislike me that much?"
Seeing the look in his eyes, Kari felt as if her heart was being squeezed, both sour and painful.
"I don't dislike you."
It was just all too sudden.
Ronald took a deep breath, his eyes full of Kari: "Whether you believe me or not, I never wanted you to find out like this. I was waiting for you to move on from your heartbreak before I told you—"
Kari clenched her fists. She had been in love before and knew how hard it was to hide one's feelings.
"I'm sorry."
She had never noticed Ronald's affection for her exceeded the boundaries of normal.
Ronald reached out, wanting to caress her head, but his hand froze mid-air.
Kari instinctively wanted to step back.
But she remained still.
After a long while, Ronald finally said: "My liking you is my business. As long as you don't avoid me, that's good enough."
"When you're ready to face me, I'll come back."
After Ronald left, Kari looked down at her toes, feeling as if an invisible hand was squeezing her heart, the air swirling around her, murky and complex.
Who would have thought, it was Lilith who messed everything up!
