The words “birth control pills” rang through the air, and a tension gripped Thalassa’s nerve. She turned to the door, her spoonful of soup from Lysander still half-swallowed.

Amelia strode into the hospital room, her eyes landing on Lysander sitting by the bed with a bowl of soup in hand and spoon poised; it was obvious that he was feeding Thalassa.

Thalassa’s breath grew heavy as she was stung by Amelia’s barb. 

Swallowing the soup, she retorted, “I didn’t ask him to feed me; he wanted to.” 

She instinctively turned to Lysander upon saying this, locking eyes with his deep, knowing gaze. But she paused, and her breath tightened.

“Oh please,” Amelia sneered, “You mean you don’t like Lysander and he’s the one clinging to you? Countless women had tried every trick just to be Lysander’s girlfriend, and he’d dismissed them without a second thought. Do you really think he’d cling to a country bumpkin like you? Take a good look in the mirror and weigh your own worth!” 

Amelia had always loathed Thalassa back when Leopold was alive. She blamed her for Leopold’s struggle in the past five years. It was Thalassa who Leopold worked tirelessly to win back. He built up his career just so he might stand a chance with her.
