"What did he say?" Everett asked.

"He spilled everything he knew, but he made it clear that he wasn't to persuade me to be with you." Dorothy knew Jeffrey, as Everett’s friend, said all these things for Everett's sake.

She had always been indifferent to Everett's efforts, giving no response and bearing no enthusiasm. In Jeffrey's eyes, she definitely was not good enough for Everett.

He felt Everett was stuck in the middle and having a very hard time. That was why he made Dorothy leave him.

"Don't listen to him." Everett said.

"I didn't, but you should thank him. Otherwise, I might have chosen to avoid the problem and solve the current troubles by divorce." Dorothy pursed her lips, "Now you can tell me why you choose not to tell me and do everything quietly."

Everett's eyes darkened, lips slightly parted.

"If you had known earlier, you would have avoided me like the plague."

Dorothy froze suddenly. She didn't see that coming.

Everett knew her so well!

He was right. If she noticed a man had feelings for her, she would consciously avoid interactions with him.

"That's why I couldn't tell you. And it's not a big deal. Why bother?" He had been doing those things from middle school but never mentioned any of them. Hence, he felt there was no use in bringing things up as now they’d grown up as adults.

Dorothy just stared at him quietly for a long, long time.

"Being in love with me must be tiring." She knew it herself.

She was very resistant to men and that’s probably because of her mother. She even thought she would never fall in love or get married in her whole life because no man could put up with her and her upbringing!

"I’m not tired." He answered.

"You're lying."

"I’m telling the truth."

"Well, I'm tired. Let's go home." She said.

His father must have bypassed him and pressured Kevin about the Dorothy’s dismissal.

That was for sure.

He took out the remaining half pack of cigarettes from his suit jacket, lit one on the balcony, and called back.

"I thought I’m not your father anymore!" Jonathan’s voice came from the other end.

"What's up?"

"Dorothy must be fired. If she feels wronged, I can give her a sum of money so she won't have to worry about her livelihood for the rest of her life! But, as you can see now, your mother can't accept her at all."

Everett took a puff while he suddenly remembered he had to go back and hold Dorothy later. He quickly put it out and took a wet wipe from the table, wiping his slender fingers over and over again.

"She's not short of money."

"So you still decided to give up your mother in the end?! Do you want me, your father, to kneel down in front of you?"
