She shrugged, “So, we’re just doing our own thing, minding our own business. Can’t it be a fair game where we’re both allowed to call the shots?” 

Leopold caught her chin, glaring at her with an intimidating gaze. But instead of lashing out, he broke into a sarcastic smile, “Are you jealous?” 

She chuckled, “Mr. Leopold, I’ve told you. Even if you were the last man on Earth, I wouldn’t be into you. I’m serious! You’re not my type. I’m pragmatic and won’t waste my feelings on you.” 

Leopold’s lips tightened, feeling an unexpected sting in his heart, as if he was shot by a bullet. 

“Who do you like then? Arnold?” He asked. 

Aurelia fell silent. She liked being with Arnold, who is handsome, talented, gentle, and humorous, devoid of the arrogance and haughtiness of the upper–class boys. He would warm her in the cold, help her when she needed it, and encourage her when she falls. He’s everything she could ever imagine in a partner. Unfortunately, she wasn’t the soulmate he was looking for. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have cut off all contact three years ago. 

The air filled with a silence so deafening it was like death itself. 

The silence made Leopold’s nerves twist in tension. 

“Why aren’t you saying anything?” 

Why isn’t she reassuring him that they’re just friends like she used to? Is she admitting it? 

A strange, sorrowful smile crossed her face, “There’s nothing to say. I don’t care what you think. Your opinions don’t affect me.” 

Her words were so calm, so nonchalant, as if he was just an insignificant passerby. 

Leopold felt a sudden, sharp pain in his heart. He opened his mouth to say something, but no words came, 

as if his throat was blocked. 

Taking advantage of the moment, Aurelia quickly slipped away from his arm and into her room. When she came out of the shower, she found Leopold standing on the balcony, motionless, like a soulless puppet. 

“Mr. Leopold, I’m going to bed. Are you going to read to the babies?” 

Her voice was cold like a breeze, causing him to shiver slightly. When he turned around, she had already walked into the room and lay on the bed. 

He sat on the edge of the bed, picking up a book from the bedside table. She was lying there with her eyes closed, so quiet, as if she was already asleep. 

He stared at her, his handsome face expressionless, as cold as ever. But deep inside, his heart was a stormy sea, filled with turbulent waves. He used to be so certain that she was a woman he could easily control, no matter how much she tried to break free. 

But now, he suddenly realized that she was far away from him, too far for him to reach. Like a kite flying high in the sky, once the string breaks, it would fly away and disappear, never to be found again. 

An inexplicable fear sprouted from the bottom of his heart and spread throughout his body. 

What was he afraid of, and what was he worried about? She was just an insignificant woman. Why did he care whether she existed or not? 

He picked up his glass and drained the water in one gulp, washing away the unwanted emotions, and began 

to read the story. 

The only thing he cared about was his children.
