There weren't many people willing to get involved in this matter, but those who did were all adept at stirring up trouble. Each one of them had been personally oppressed by Josiah before his disappearance.

This was Lysander's first appearance at Guerra Group's shareholder meeting. She wasn't late. In fact, she had arrived almost half an hour early. Yet she still found herself suffocating under the weight of the pressure she felt.

The board members clearly had no respect for her. She had no intention of staying long at Guerra Group, so she decided to keep her words to a minimum, giving off a mysterious aura.

With the help of Carol and the shareholders loyal to Josiah, the decision to sever ties with Riveron Corporation was finally passed. However, new problems quickly followed.

“Mrs. Guerra, what exactly has Mr. Guerra been up to? There are rumors circulating outside that he's in danger and has been missing for several days now.”

“That's right. If you're stepping in to fill his position temporarily, we have no objections. After all, it's a decision made by Mr. Guerra himself. However, we do need some sort of confirmation, don't you think?”

Lysander had anticipated that the truth couldn't be concealed for long, so she had already gotten her story straight together with Carol. At this moment, she glanced at them impassively and retorted in the same tone she used to use with Josiah, “Mr. Guerra has merely gone on a business trip overseas. Who is spreading such rumors out there?”

Her tone reminded everyone of the fear they experienced under Josiah's authority. Combined with the leaks by Monica, who had always been in charge of business overseas, they managed to gloss over the situation without any incident.

Lysander managed to get through the meeting without any real trouble. By the time she returned to her office, she was utterly exhausted, both physically and mentally. Yet, she still mustered the strength to tackle the pile of work awaiting her.

Carol was indeed doing her utmost to assist Lysander, but due to the disparity in their positions, her efforts were significantly limited. “Mrs. Guerra, they are already testing your limits. I fear it won't be long before they bring up the matter of ending the cooperation with Riveron Corporation again.”

“I know,” Lysander said, massaging his temples, trying to quickly choose a new partner from the companies that had previously attended the tender.

As Carol still had to continue her investigation on the whereabouts of Josiah, she quickly left the office after leaving the relevant documents.

Lysander was utterly engrossed in her work, and by the time she had finally drafted a list of potential candidates, it was already past lunchtime. Completely absorbed in her task, she found herself wanting to hear a professional opinion. Without thinking, she began to ask, “Josiah, what do you think about these companies...”

However, the office was silent, devoid of any response.

Her voice thus softened, eventually becoming barely audible.

Lysander glanced around the spacious yet inexplicably desolate office, sarcastically remarking, “What am I doing? I always forget why I'm even here.”

The silence was truly deafening. If she didn't make a sound soon, she would feel like she was the only person left in the world.

It turned out that it took less than a month to form a habit.

Before, she would occasionally find Josiah's constant presence rather annoying. But now that he had disappeared without a trace, she felt an inexplicable sense of loneliness.

This feeling peaked when she received a call from the police station.

Lysander thought there was progress in the case, so she immediately answered the call. However, what she heard wasn't good news.

“Ms. Thorne, the investigation of the fire has concluded. We didn't find any leads related to Mr. Guerra. Similarly, other colleagues who have been searching for him have also come up empty-handed. For now, we can only classify this as a missing persons case.”

The police officer reported the matter in a very tactful way.

Lysander paused for a moment, then asked calmly, “Is there... any chance he might have survived?”

The police officer hadn't expected her to speak so bluntly and responded regretfully, “In theory, yes.”
