"Noelle, that's a bit harsh, isn't it?" Sean said, his voice edged with frustration. "If I was just hungry, I could've grabbed a bite downtown. Why would I bother coming all the way from my place to yours?" He sighed dramatically. "Do you really think I'd want to come and play house if Charles hadn't twisted my arm?"
Noelle was speechless.
"Don't mind his blabbering!" Charles shook his head. "Noelle, why don't you tidy up the dishes? Sean and I need to talk."
"Sure thing!" Noelle agreed, nodding. "You guys head to the living room. It's cramped here, and we don't have a study," she said a bit sheepishly.
Sean quirked an eyebrow. "Hey, no offense taken. I was just messing around. Let's head out, Charles!" After a satisfying meal, Sean felt rejuvenated and trailed behind Charles into the living room.
"You didn't just call me over for dinner, right?" Sean said, twirling a cigarette between his fingers without lighting it. "I noticed some shady figures lurking downstairs when I arrived. What's up with that?"
Charles's brow creased with concern. "It's the Baker family."
"The Bakers? Seriously? Your uncle's actually making a move?" Sean's eyes widened in disbelief. He had heard rumors, sure, but that was more intense than he had expected. "I mean, Janet isn't even his real daughter, and he's going all out for her? And that's not even half of it..."
Sean gave a nonchalant shrug. "So, what's your game plan? There was quite the stir recently, and your little distraction worked pretty well. However, since your crew's still here, it looks like your uncle is still a problem."
"Alright, I'm here now, and I've eaten, so just tell me what you want from me! But you know as well as I do that you can't hide this forever. Your uncle's too sharp. He'll figure it out in no time!"
"We don't need forever, just three months!" He had to get rid of the Janet problem within those three months and send Clarisse back to Capiton too, otherwise, Charles would never feel comfortable bringing Noelle home.
"Okay, three months it is. You know the drill—if my folks catch wind of this, they'll be on my back about blind dates and getting hitched, so wrap it up fast." Sean flicked his cigarette into the trash can with a spin.
He got up and peered out the window. "Your uncle's really on the ball, keeping watch all night. I've got to ask, with everyone on the lookout, how'd you sneak up here?"
