Eloise's hands balled into fists. "I'm going to check on the kitchen too!"
With Eloise out of the room, Peter's lips quirked up. "You think the Naylors will really accept her?"
Steven shot Peter a look. "There's nothing I can't handle," he said confidently.
"But she's innocent," Peter protested as he rose to his feet, giving Steven's shoulder a reassuring pat. "Mr. Fischer, there's more than one way to skin a cat, you know. It doesn't have to be..."
"My decisions are final!" Steven cut him off, shrugging off Peter's hand. "You should worry about yourself!" He paused before adding, "Didn't you say your third uncle is about to return? Sir Lennon had always preferred him. They only turned to you when he vanished. Peter, you can't sweat the small stuff when you're playing the long game."
Peter's eyes dimmed with a touch of sadness. "I know." He had always known. Those were the years he had nearly walked away from it all, but they would not let him. "How's everything at the company?"
"Everything's under control, the job's done right," Steven said with a sly grin as the door swung open again. Charles stepped in from the outside, not at all surprised to find Steven there. He slipped off his shoes and joined the other two men for a chat.
Charles brought up something about Peter, "Hey Peter, do you know this guy Trevon?"
Peter scrunched his face, trying to remember. "The name rings a bell, but I can't quite place him." He pulled out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket but did not light one. Instead, he just rolled one between his fingers.
Peter had kicked the habit for good when Tania was expecting, ready to start a new chapter with her. However, after they split, the cravings kept coming back. Whenever they hit, he would just play with the cigarettes, never actually smoking them.
"I remember something about him too, but it's all hazy. The word from Carvonia is that Trevon's been bouncing between there and other places. He tied the knot with Tania, alright, but they're not together. So, I'm betting there's more to their marriage than meets the eye," Charles added.
It was clear that the guy knew his stuff. Peter could not get the upper hand no matter how hard he tried.
Charles and Steven felt the weird vibes too as they reached the top of the stairs. They rushed over just in time to see Peter duking it out with the mystery assailant. Steven narrowed his eyes, sizing up the situation, then leaped into the battle. It was not long before the attacker was gasping for breath, and with a swift kick from Steven, the figure was sent sprawling to the floor.
Steven narrowed his eyes again, ready to pounce and catch the intruder, but the guy threw some kind of powder from his clothes, blinding Steven momentarily.
The attacker took the chance to bolt, but Steven and the others did not chase after him. Instead, they turned to Peter. "Are you good?"
Peter frowned deeply as he glanced at Brandon, who was still out cold. He breathed a sigh of relief, but that relief turned to ice when his gaze landed on a syringe lying on the floor. His eyes, dark as night, flashed with fierce intensity.
