Chapter 25 novel The Day Our Promise Breaks (Charles and Evelyn)

At that moment, she looked into his eyes, which reflected her own image. Summoning her courage, she walked over. She kicked the bullies a few times. Her legs were still shaky, making her kicks feeble and ineffective.

Charles let out a soft scoff, "You’re utterly useless." As his words fell, he lifted his foot and stomped down hard on the waist of the bully, who attempted to assault her.

Charles incapacitated him completely.

In that instant, Evelyn could clearly hear her heart pounding, like it was about to leap out of her chest. Her heart had just begun to awaken to love, and now she harbored a secret.

A secret about Charles.

Once upon a time, Charles had been so good to her, but all that changed after Dahlia appeared.

Evelyn forcefully closed her eyes, pushing down the tumultuous emotions inside her.

When she opened her eyes again, she was calm. She leaned against the wall, struggling to stand up.

Limping step by step, she moved closer to the man, raising her leg with all her remaining strength. She wanted to stomp down hard on the man’s waist as payback for harassing her.

Amidst his agonized screams, her legs gave out, and her body slumped. This time, she did not fall to the ground because an arm encircled her waist from behind, pulling her into an embrace and lifting her off her feet.

At that moment, Evelyn was too weak to struggle. Charles carried her to his car parked by the roadside. Standing by the car, he called the police.

The police arrived quickly. After giving her statement, Evelyn left the police station at nearly midnight.

She was about to call a taxi when Charles' car stopped in front of her. His cool, indifferent voice reached her. "Get in."

"No, thank you." Evelyn didn't move.

Charles' expression darkened. "What, wasn't what happened earlier enough for you? Do you want to experience it again?"

The aftereffects of the earlier scene lingered. Evelyn didn't insist any further. She put away her phone, opened the car door, and got in.

As soon as she got in, she heard a scoff. Evelyn paused as she was buckling her seatbelt. She was about to get out, but the car suddenly started moving. She was unsteady, so she reached out to stabilize herself and quickly fastened her seatbelt.

She turned her head, silently looking out the window.

...

The police station wasn't far from Maple Garden.

After about fifteen minutes, the car stopped. Evelyn got out and went upstairs without looking back.

Once home, she collapsed on the sofa.

She lay there for a while before getting up and going to the bedroom to take a shower.

Ignoring the wound on her leg, she cleaned herself up and lay in bed. As her nerves relaxed, her mind was filled with the scenes from the alley.

Even now, safe and sound, the fear and despair were inescapable and lingered in her mind. Every time she closed her eyes, that scene would reappear.

Evelyn got up and walked to the dining table. The bottle of wine Adam had bought to celebrate with her was on the table.

Wine was good for soothing nerves, allowing her a good night's sleep. She opened the bottle and poured herself a glass, drinking it in one gulp.
