Upon hearing Charles's words, Dahlia's eyes instantly brimmed with tears.

"Charles, I know I've wronged Charlie, but I'm already a mess. You have no idea what I've been through these past two years, and Evelyn just won't let it go."

"I get that she can't get over Charlie's death. It's not like I don't understand."

"I was genuinely relieved to hear she was alive. I sought her out today to apologize again. It's been two years, and I hoped she could move on and start fresh. But I never imagined..."

"You can't even begin to understand how she tormented me in that room! She nearly killed me!"

"If you hadn't shown up when you did, I might not be here right now."

Dahlia cried like a fragile flower caught in the rain. She said this, convinced that Charles would take her side and comfort her. Between her and Evelyn, she was certain Charles would unhesitatingly choose to protect her.

Charles's voice was cold and steady. "Dahlia, I told you two years ago to keep your distance from Evelyn, to stay out of her way."

That one sentence drained the color from Dahlia's face. She looked at Charles, hurt and aggrieved. "Are you saying I deserved what Evelyn did to me?"

"As long as you don't go looking for trouble."

Charles spoke calmly after reviewing the injury report and feeling reassured.

"So, you're saying I should duck and dodge every time I see her?"

"Dahlia, let's not do this. Let me take you home to rest. I'll handle the police report."

Charles softened his tone. But to Dahlia, being told not to make a fuss was like rubbing salt in the wound. She'd been slapped and kicked by Evelyn, and yet he said she was overreacting. But the injury report left her with no grounds to accuse Evelyn.

No matter how upset she felt, she had to swallow her pride and endure it. Swallowing her pride, she forced out a single word, "Okay."

In the car, sitting in the passenger seat, Dahlia listened to Charles call the police station. She knew that once the call ended, the incident of her being beaten by Evelyn would be brushed under the rug.
