He turned his head, eyes sharp as daggers, and asked Adam coldly, "What do you mean by that?"
What did he mean by saying Eve was being driven to her death again?
"What do I mean? Two years ago, Eve was pushed into severe depression by you and Dahlia. Do you even know how she managed to pull through?"
Severe depression? Charles was visibly stunned by those words. It's not that he didn't believe in depression. He just remembered Evelyn from two years ago. Aside from being a bit emotionally unstable, he didn't see any signs of depression in her. And now, two years later, she seemed perfectly fine. Evelyn, depressed? Impossible!
Seeing Charles's disbelief, Adam strode over to him. This time, he didn't hit Charles; instead, he took Evelyn's hand that rested on her abdomen. Right in front of Charles, he slowly rolled up Evelyn's sleeve, exposing the wristband underneath. Without giving Charles any time to process, he ripped off the wristband, revealing the scars Evelyn had desperately tried to hide.
Charles felt as if he had been struck by lightning, unable to believe his own eyes. Those crisscrossed scars, each one was so deep. Even if he hadn't seen it firsthand, just looking at those scars, one could tell how determined the person was when they caused them. If she hadn't truly wanted to die, she wouldn't have gone to such lengths.
"Charles, what did Eve ever do to deserve this from you? Why do you keep pushing her? Two years ago, she fell into the river, barely clawed her way back from the brink of death, and then had to battle depression, fighting against death time and again, suffering immeasurable pain and torment just to keep her life. Do you even know how important Ms. Josephine was to Evelyn? With Charlie gone, Ms. Josephine became her most cherished person, her emotional anchor. Yet you treated Ms. Josephine's life as insignificant, using her to pressure Eve, disregarding her well-being. If anything happened to Ms. Josephine, it would drive Eve to her death again!"
...
Inside the car, Charles held Evelyn close, his large hand gently brushing over the scars on her wrist. His downcast eyes hid his emotions, leaving his thoughts a mystery. Evelyn awoke from her discomfort. She had drunk too much, and halfway through the ride, her stomach began to churn. "Pull over."
Seeing Evelyn's discomfort, Charles immediately instructed the driver to pull over to the side of the road.
