Evelyn leaned on Adam's shoulder, finally letting her emotions show as she whispered, her voice choked with fear, "Adam, I'm really scared. What if Mom ends up like Charlie?"

"She won't. Your mom's going to be okay," Adam reassured her quickly.

Nearby, Charles felt his heart tighten at the mention of Charlie, unable to hide the pain in his eyes. The surgery had dragged on for over ten hours and was still ongoing.

As night fell, the three of them anxiously awaited news about Josephine outside the operating room, their appetites vanished since lunch. By evening, Charles had arranged for some food from the Orange Grove restaurant.

Evelyn, however, didn't feel like eating. Charles knew that trying to persuade her wouldn't work unless he forced her, which he didn't want to do at that moment. He glanced over at Adam.

Adam, always on Evelyn's team and not too fond of Charles, nonetheless wouldn't refuse to help if it was for Evelyn's sake. He stepped forward, took the food container, and sat back down next to her.

He unpacked the meal, revealing four dishes and a soup, all Evelyn’s favorites. She didn't look, her eyes glued to the operating room doors from her spot on the bench.

Adam gently placed a small bowl of food in her hands. "Adam, you eat. I really can't stomach anything right now."

"Evelyn, I know you're worried about your mom, but we don't know how long this will take. If you don't eat, how will you keep up your strength?"

"Don't you want to be here when her surgery succeeds?"
