“Jonathan, what are you doing here?”

“Sherman, did you call my brother?”

“Aurora, something this serious—did you really think you could keep it from him? Besides, your hand is injured.”

Jonathan knew Aurora’s tendency to downplay her troubles. He glanced at Sherman for confirmation.

“The brakes in my uncle’s car failed. Someone sabotaged it.”

“How could something like this happen? Has Sellers made any enemies?”

Sherman let out a strange, mirthless laugh.

“My uncle rarely comes to New Vespera. He doesn’t have any grudges here. In fact, he only arrived off the plane today. The only person he had any sort of conflict with since landing—well, that person is—”

Sherman didn’t get to finish. Aurora cut him off, her voice sharp as a whip.
