When Jonathan burst into the room, Aurora froze for a split second.

“Jonathan, what are you doing here?”

Then a thought struck her. She turned sharply toward Sherman.

“Sherman, did you call my brother?”

Simone and Sellers would never gossip or tip Jonathan off. That left only Sherman, who had always been prejudiced against Stella.

Sherman avoided her gaze, shifting his eyes away.

“Aurora, something this serious—did you really think you could keep it from him? Besides, your hand is injured.”

At the mention of Aurora’s injury, Jonathan’s expression finally changed. His eyes dropped to her hand.

“Aurora, what happened to you?”

Her left hand was wrapped neatly in white gauze.

Aurora’s face was calm, almost dismissive.

“Jonathan, Sherman’s just overreacting. It’s nothing—just a hairline fracture in my pinky finger. Really, I’m fine.”

Jonathan knew Aurora’s tendency to downplay her troubles. He glanced at Sherman for confirmation.

Sherman nodded slightly, confirming Aurora’s story. Then he spoke in a low, serious tone.

“Jonathan, if this were just a regular car accident, I wouldn’t have made a fuss. But this wasn’t an accident. Someone tampered with the car—it was deliberate.”

He met Jonathan’s eyes, gaze steely.

“The brakes in my uncle’s car failed. Someone sabotaged it.”

Jonathan’s brows furrowed.

“How could something like this happen? Has Sellers made any enemies?”

Sherman let out a strange, mirthless laugh.

“My uncle rarely comes to New Vespera. He doesn’t have any grudges here. In fact, he only arrived off the plane today. The only person he had any sort of conflict with since landing—well, that person is—”

Sherman didn’t get to finish. Aurora cut him off, her voice sharp as a whip.

“Sherman, if you keep talking nonsense, don’t blame me for cutting you off as a friend.”
