KAEL.

“I don’t know. I can’t remember anything about her, but…” I paused.

“But?” she asked.

“But I crave her.” I didn’t know why I let those words slip out. I couldn’t even admit that to myself, but for some reason, it flew out of my tongue as if it were the general truth.

Desiree’s chest heaved as her nose flared.

In just two steps, she was in front of me. Her hand flew and landed on my cheek. She slapped me hard, and it sting. But it didn’t break anything within me. It didn’t rattle my senses, unlike when we were younger, whenever she was fuming mad at me. So I knew this was the end of us.

I didn’t want to hurt her, but I also didn’t want to shower her with words she would rather hear.

“Shame on you, Kael! Adessa tricked you into marrying her once, and she’s doing it all over again! And you’re just letting her! Who knows, maybe the danger she's in is just a game she's playing to get your attention!" She stopped to take a deep breath, but then she continued. “Oh, how I wish she was really in danger and that sooner, she’ll end up dead!”

A growl reverberated from my chest at her words.

My hand grabbed her arm, tugging it. “Take it back!”

“No!” She shoved my hand, and since I was not holding her too tightly, she was able to get away. She stepped back and smiled sarcastically at me. “I wish her dead! And if you think I will leave this house, you’re wrong! I’m not leaving, and I’m not going to give you up without fighting! I’m claiming what’s mine!”

She turned around and walked out of my office, slamming the door on her way out.

I growled again and aimed for the nearest wall, punching it hard to release all the pent-up frustration inside me.

I had no one to blame but myself. We all ended up entangled because I let her believe there were still us. I might be guilty, but that didn’t mean I would let Desiree take control of me again.

I needed her out of my house, not just because she was no longer my girlfriend, but because I couldn’t trust her or anyone at the moment.

Within twenty-four hours of our breakup, six of Rasmus’ trusted men arrived, and I immediately asked two of them to escort Desiree out of the house. She didn’t want to, but when she realized these men meant business as they packed her things for her, she had no choice but to leave.

I could have my own men do that, but I didn’t want any news to spread that I kicked her out. At least with Rasmus’ men, I was sure they knew no one from here, and I could tell them to keep everything happening here between us.

I trusted no one—not even my own men.

Rasmus men became the security of my home.

Dexter, Miranda, Desiree, and even Landon were not allowed entrance into my house anymore. Any business, conversations, and meetings were held at the Central Hall.
