“A sleepy shifter won’t emit an aroused scent, Adessa,” Kael said, and I felt him move away from me.

I remained still with my eyes closed, clutching my blanket tightly. I was so brave yesterday in telling him I would pleasure him as long as he returned safely, but I was cowering at the moment.

What if he ended up not satisfied? What if I couldn’t make him cum?

Or what if, like last time, we had sex and his mind drifted off to Desiree?

Did he say he broke up with Desiree after he bought that ring back?

“Kael?” I said in almost a whisper.

“Hmmm…” He mummed.

“Why did you break up with Desiree?”

“I have a wife.” He answered in a monotone voice.

“We are divorced.”

“Because I decided hastily. I shouldn't have done that. If I didn't, then you're still my wife."

I remained quiet, not knowing what to say.

"Up to this moment, I'm still trying to connect the dots on things I don't understand. Sometimes, I would knock my head onto something to see if I would end up remembering anything.”

“It must be hard not to remember anything.”

“It’s not easy. I felt stupid and dumb at times.”

“You’re not stupid or dumb.”

“I’m sure you thought of me that way when I kicked you out of my life without asking for your side of the story.”

“I won’t deny I was upset, and I got angry at some point, but I never thought of you that way. I knew what happened was more because this is how my life has always been. I never get what I want. I assumed it was life's way of saying "no" to me one more time."

“You want me." He said in a low voice, but I heard it loud and clear.

I swallowed. It was unfair if I had to tell him that when I didn’t even know where I stood in his life. All I knew was that he was here because he was a good man, and he felt guilty for all the chaos in my life.

I sensed his movement, but I couldn't tell if he turned his back on me or faced me, as I stayed in the same position.

“Adessa?” He spoke, breaking the silence between us.

“Hmm…”

“After we clear your name and we get out of this mess, do you think..." He paused, and my heartbeat began picking up pace. I gripped my blanket more tightly, anticipating the worst as I waited for him to continue.

“Do you think we can give our marriage another try?” Kael’s voice was so low, as if he had a difficult time speaking.
