ADESSA.

“I’m not complaining. It was a good one year.” I told him, still smiling, and this time I nodded my head to convince him more.

He took my hand and brought it to his mouth, kissing my knuckles. “The best is yet to come. I promise…”

He lowered our hands but kept holding mine as we continued to drive in silence.

Despite losing his memory, Kael was still the same Kael I knew. He was always calculated and never seemed fazed by uncertainties or danger, but something about him changed. He became more expressive.

Before his accident, he would always kiss me or hug me, which frequently ended up with us having sex. But lately, he would do the same but never push more. He was content to simply hold my hand or give me a hug. And I liked it.

If I were being honest, I had no idea if I should be grateful for all the things happening in my life at the moment because Kael was being extra protective and attentive to me like he had never been before.

“We’re here.” His voice snapped back to the present, and it was only then that it dawned on me that he had already stopped the car, and ahead of us was a log house.

It was of decent size—but big for someone like me who had never owned a house. It was beautiful and well maintained despite being located somewhere deep in the forest.

“Who lives here?” I asked as I looked around. Even the outside area was well maintained and clean.

“Erika,” he replied.

My head slowly tilted to look at him. I wasn’t expecting him to be looking at me, so I was not able to hide the grim expression on my face.

He chuckled before flicking the tip of my nose, making me scrunch my face. “So I assume, based on your expression, that I have never spoken of her.”

“How many exes do you have?” I asked, playfully rolling my eyes.

In all honesty, I only knew of Desiree. He only talked about Brooke and their past today on our way here, so even if I didn’t want to, I was already jealous of Erika.

“Erika is not my ex. She was my father’s ex.”

“What?”

“She was almost my stepmother if Miranda didn’t pop out of nowhere and take my father away from her.”

“Ohhh…” My eyes widened. So the real homewrecker was Miranda and not me, like how she was playing it.

“But…” He paused.

My heart drummed. I didn’t like the but part.

“She has a daughter almost the same age as me.” He added.

“And she likes you.” I assumed because everybody liked Kael.

“She liked me. Past tense. But, last I heard, she was already married.”
