ADESSA.

After they swabbed something inside my mouth, I was allowed to leave the room. The woman that came with the two men was named Danielle, and she was to be my handmaid.

I was still trying to get a grip on what was happening.

A part of me wanted to wish the Alpha King was wrong with his assumption that I was his missing daughter and that I was a princess so I could be free to look for Kael again, but making that wish reality could only mean more trouble for me. If I were not his daughter, he would surely have ordered me to go to prison.

Either way, I was at the losing end.

But maybe, if I were his daughter, not allowing me to see Kael would just be temporary. If I could explain to him our history, he would surely understand. I kept my hopes and head high as I followed Danielle along the long corridor until I realized we were heading for what looked like an exit. There were two men in front of us and another two behind me.

“Where are we going?” I asked. My heart was beating loudly again as I wasn’t sure if I could trust these people.

“To the main palace. We could have gone to the main staircase, but the party was still in full swing. They might see you, and the King’s direction was to make sure no one sees you for now.”

I thought we were heading outside, but before we reached the end of the corridor, one of the men ahead of us pressed an antique-looking wall lamp, and a door cracked open from the wall. You would never guess it was not a wall. I knew old castles and palaces had secret ways and doors, but I had no idea they still existed.

“Is it safe to go there?” I asked when one man went inside, and the one who opened the wall motioned with his hand for us to go after the other.

“It is safe, Princess Adessa. Handmaids and guards like us have a different passage to the main palace. This route is only for the royal family. But we will accompany you to keep you safe.”

I was worried, but I kept a straight face. “Thank you. I’m sure my father would not want any harm to come my way.”

“I will protect you with my life, my lady. And the four men with us will be your temporary guards until the King assigns your own guards.” Danielle spoke.

I remained quiet as we walked through the secret passage, but I kept my senses sharp while memorizing the way I should go if I needed to use this route again. I expected a dark tunnel-like passage, but it was actually a pleasant hallway with lights everywhere.

Danielle pointed to the turns that led to other parts of the castle until we reached our exit, and the main palace came into view.

I was glad I was able to stop my mouth from dropping the moment my eyes fell on the grandeur before me. If the area where the party was being held was already magnificent, the main castle was a lot more grand, and I failed to explain how I felt.

Golden furniture and displays were everywhere. I was itching to ask if they were real gold, but I didn’t want to look stupid, so I kept my mouth shut and just let my eyes soak in everything I was seeing.

Why did I even think being a princess was a bad idea? This was what my dreams were made of when I was a little girl.

But then I remembered Kael.
