With each step brimming with greater resolve, Matthew came to the president's office and opened the door.
The sight before him left him dumbfounded. Besides Rachel, Martin and Yvonne were in the office. They seemed to be in an argument.
…
A few minutes earlier, Rachel cleared away the tissues from the floor and had just finished cleaning up. Out of the blue, Martin and Yvonne entered her office.
Seeing their arrival, Rachel felt a wave of relief for getting Matthew to wrap things up quickly. If he had stuck around for another 30 minutes, it would've been awkward.
"Why didn't you give me a heads-up before coming over, Dad, Mom?"
Smiling, Yvonne replied, "I'm just dropping by to check on you, Rachel. Why are you sweating so much? Work's been too hard, huh?"
Feeling flustered, Rachel responded, "I'm just worn out from work, so I did some exercising."
Martin was sulking. Realizing Rachel wasn't going to talk to him, he started, "Just the other day, I told you on the phone that I found a date for you. He's from the Kimble family in Khoitwood, and the family has a bigger reputation than our family.
"I wasn't done talking when you hung up on me. Now that I'm here, tell me your reason for rejecting it."
Knowing she couldn't escape this conversation, Rachel just came out and stated, "I think Matthew is pretty good for me."
Matthew? Hearing that name made Martin furious.
"How dare you bring him up? He got into trouble with the Wood family, and it nearly dragged our family down for good. Besides that, didn't you both announce your breakup? Is he still pestering you?"
Matthew knitted his brows together. Things were pretty straightforward with Rachel. But when Martin and Yvonne showed up, everything went sideways.
Rachel had to be the one to decide how to handle them, so Matthew turned to look at her.
Martin snickered. "Stop eyeing at Rae. As her dad, I get to make the call about her marriage. As long as I'm still alive, you can forget about it. Just leave already."
Matthew looked solemn. "I'm not leaving."
Martin furrowed his brows. "What the hell! Are you trying to cling to Rae?"
Matthew was about to say something when Rachel cut him off and said, "You've got it wrong, Dad. Matthew has been trying to break up with me. I'm the one who is still holding on and refusing to end things."
