Braylen turned to the kid next to him. "Lorraine's dad doesn't care about her anymore, so she becomes an orphan. Trust me, orphans are the most pitiful."

Lorraine kept her head down with tears streaming down her face. She quietly pursed her lips and moved forward with the group.

As the parents formed a line to pick up their kids, the teacher started calling out the children's names one by one.

As the teacher shouted Lorraine's name, she walked out of the group with her head lowered. Then, she raised her head and asked, "Grandma, is Dad…"

Halfway through her sentence, she spotted Matthew standing before her and immediately shouted, "Dad!"

Hearing Lorraine call out excitedly, Matthew rubbed her delicate cheek. "I'm here to pick you up."

Lorraine looked like she had recalled something when she turned to Matthew and pulled him along. "Come with me, Dad. Hurry up."

Matthew had no idea what Lorraine was up to, but he quickly followed her.

Lorraine ran a few steps ahead and caught up with Braylen, grabbing his arm. "Dad's here. He cares about me, so don't go around saying he isn't."

Braylen shrugged and dismissively responded, "I don't care. I'll still say it. Your dad is going to ditch you eventually."

Feeling upset, Lorraine held onto Braylen and stopped him from leaving. "You need to say sorry. If you don't, I'll tell the teacher."

Braylen made a funny face. "I won't say sorry even if you tell the teacher. I'll just annoy you instead."

Matthew furrowed his brows. Lorraine had always been on her best behavior, and she was treated like a princess at home. But every child in kindergarten was cherished by their family.

Even though Matthew felt a pang in his heart, he stayed level-headed and held back his anger, so he stayed out of the argument between the children.

Lorraine's cheeks flushed with anger. She raised her volume and approached Gavin Hostetler, Braylen's dad.

Gavin glared at Matthew. "Why are you stopping me?"

Matthew coldly remarked, "Your kid isn't even yours by blood."

Gavin was infuriated. "What nonsense is this? He's my biological son. Are you trying to start something?"

Matthew snickered. "I was just playing around. Can't you handle a joke? Aren't you old enough for that?"

Gavin erupted in anger. "You call that a joke? Do you even know what you're saying? Who jokes like that?"

Matthew sported a solemn expression. "Fine, then. I'll stop joking with you. As a doctor, I can confidently say you have Cryonephritis. Your lower back must have been exposed to cold in the winter.

"It's like an ice pack is pressed against your lower back for so long that the cold gets into your body and damages your kidney. Cryonephritis is linked to infertility, so you can't have kids. That's why your son isn't really yours."
