Matthew was startled. After a few drinks, Kingston turned into a creep, so he quickly pulled his hand away. A wave of disgust washed over him.

"What's your problem? I'm a man, and I'm not into this. If you're feeling lonely, go find a woman at the bar."

Kingston shook his head. "Going to a bar? That'd be a bad idea. I'm an honest man. If I went down that path, what kind of person would I become?"

Matthew fell silent. After all that conversation, he still hadn't learned anything about Plague Compendium. He frowned, racking his brain for a plan.

Kingston stumbled as he got up. "How about we hit a bar for once? I've never experienced what it's like to be with a woman. What if I never get a wife? I'd be missing out big time."

Matthew was worried about the Plague Compendium situation. Upon hearing that, he chuckled and replied, "Tell me where Plague Compendium is, and I'll go with you to the bar. I'll join you for a night of fun."

Smiling, Kingston added, "Go to the bar first, and I'll tell you after we get back."

Matthew was delighted, surprised that Kingston went along with it. It was easier than expected. "Alright. I'll take you to the bar right now then."

As they spoke, Matthew steadied Kingston and walked him out.

The words "Rose Bar" flickered brightly under the neon lights with a striking crimson rose beside them.

Looking at the sign of the bar, Kingston muttered, "Is this the place?"

Matthew replied, "Yes. Weren't you curious about what's like to sleep with a woman?"

Kingston stumbled a few steps and then wobbled back over to Matthew. He hooked his arm around Matthew's to keep his balance.

"I can't put my finger on it, but it just doesn't feel right. It's probably easier to just go to Woolfields, where the wives are alone at home with their husbands working out of town."

Matthew couldn't believe it. Kingston had no experience with women, but he was still so picky—wanting a proper one.

Kingston thought Matthew didn't believe him, so he thumped his chest and swore, "Everything I said is legit. If I'm making any of this up, I'll be single for the rest of my life.

"To give you an idea, there are six hotels in our small town, but there aren't that many people coming here for business trips.

"It's just people using the hotel rooms for flings. On Women's Day and Valentine's Day, the hotel trash bins are filled with condoms, lingerie, and undergarments. You simply can't imagine it."

Matthew didn't doubt it. Back when he was in school, the hotels around campus were always fully booked every Sunday. He just didn't expect the same thing to happen in small towns now.

But Matthew wasn't interested in any of that, so he quickly changed the subject. "If it's that easy to make a move, why are you still a virgin?"

Feeling frustrated, Kingston snapped, "That's because Dad is a plague doctor, so people assume I am as well. They avoid me like the plague. If it weren't for my reputation as a plague doctor, I'd have scored a few women myself.

"Being a plague doctor has ruined my life. I just don't get why you're so determined to get Plague Compendium. The book is going to ruin you."
