The elevator soon reached the first floor, and Matthew turned to the woman. "Hello, there. My family sent me some local goods from back home, and they're a bit heavy for me. Would it be okay if I placed them on your stretcher for a moment?"
"Go ahead," the woman replied as she sobbed before going quiet.
Matthew put the box near the old man's feet and said, "These local specialties are good for the elderly. I'm giving them to him as a gift. It's just a small token of my regard."
The woman hastily declined, "No, I can't accept that. Hey, don't leave. Your specialties!"
Matthew grabbed Rachel and hurried off, ignoring the woman's shouts from behind them.
She called out a few times, wanting to pick up the box and chase after them. But it was too heavy for her to carry.
Wiping her tears, she said to her father, "Look at that. They think I'm refusing to pay for your treatment and that I'm ungrateful. They gave you a gift because they felt sorry for you. I've become a laughingstock in other people's eyes."
The old man felt dejected. "Why worry about what others think? We know what's really going on. I'm the one turning down the treatment. We don't need anyone's sympathy. Throw the gift away because we don't need anything from outsiders."
The woman shook her head. "They had good intentions. It'd be a pity to toss the specialties away. Let me take a look at what's inside."
As she spoke, she opened the box, only to be stunned by the sight of the money inside. When she finally snapped back to reality, she turned to the hospital door and realized Matthew was nowhere to be found.
In a flash, her tears poured out non-stop. She muttered, "Am I dreaming, Dad?"
…
A car drove down the road. Sitting inside, Rachel gently asked, "What's up with the old man we just saw earlier? What's his condition? He looked so sad."
Matthew sighed. "He's old and doesn't have much time left. Surgery won't do much. Anyway, I'll go talk to the Fuller family. You should get back to the office."
Rachel was a little concerned. "Can you handle this by yourself?"
Smiling, he replied, "When it comes to business between men, it's simple. Just one cigarette takes care of it."
Kayden groaned in pain before saying, "It's done."
Lyndon confidently smirked. "I told you to put on a show and let Matthew know my address after you were defeated. Did you follow my instructions?"
Shaking with pain, Kayden replied, "I got my head messed up and broke a leg before I told him anything. He wouldn't suspect a thing."
Lyndon was taken aback. He had only asked Kayden to pretend, but he didn't expect Kayden to go this far, so he grinned in approval. "You did well, Kayden. Your efforts won't go unnoticed by me, and the Fuller family won't forget it. You'll be handsomely compensated for this."
Kayden had to accept this bitter outcome. If he had known Matthew was so brutal, he wouldn't have given Matthew a hard time.
After hanging up, Lyndon instructed Anson, "Kayden got beaten up badly and broke a leg. Matthew won't suspect this is a trap.
"Tell them to get ready. When Matthew shows up on the upper floor, douse every room and the hallway on the 12th floor with gasoline, then light it up. I'm sacrificing half a building for this. No way Matthew is coming out alive."
Anson took out his phone. "I'll have them get ready right away."
