After descending the mountain, Stephen wanted to go home for a visit. However, at the thought of Rachel’s attitude toward him, he sighed, deciding otherwise. 

The problem in Hill City was still unresolved, and Rachel was still cold toward him. What was the point of going home? 

“Let’s return to Hill City.” 

With that, he left with Nolan. 

In the plane, Stephen looked at Nolan, who was resting with his eyes closed. There was a nagging feeling of distrust in his mind. 

Although Ethan did not answer his question, the hitman’s words when he turned himself echoed in his mind. Before he could uncover the truth, Stephen could not fully trust Nolan, and that doubt was precisely what the South Regent wanted. With doubt came opportunities, just as how Julius‘ death was caused by Stephen and George’s suspicions of Julius. 

Night had fallen by the time Stephen returned to his residence in Hill City. After a full day of travel, he felt tired but found himself wide awake as he lay in bed. 

Closing his eyes, he could not help but wonder who he should be wary of. Who could he trust? The more he thought about it, the more frustrated he became, and to make matters worse, 

there was no one he could talk to. 

Just then, his phone suddenly rang. Stephen picked up his phone and looked at the screen. It was a message from Blake, his high school president. They had met at a class reunion when he returned to the capital not long ago. 

“Why is he texting me at midnight?” 

Stephen opened the message and soon understood the situation. It turned out one of their classmates was in trouble and urgently needed money, so Blake was reaching out to ask if everyone could pitch in. 

Stephen called Blake to ask about the situation. 

“Stephen, you’re still up?” Blake was a little surprised. 

“I was just about to go to bed,” Stephen replied, but the truth was that he could not sleep at all. “Tell me what’s going on.” 

“Do you remember Jeremy Davis?” Blake said, “The top student from the class next door.” 

Stephen nodded. “I do.” 

Jeremy was not just the top student from the class next door; he was a top student in the 

entire grade, always scoring top five in all the exams. He gained admission to their prestigious school because of his outstanding academic results.

His mother worked three jobs just to keep the family afloat. Despite her efforts, his father did not make it, passing away after draining what little money they had left. On top of that, he left behind tens of thousands in debt. 

After that, Jeremy’s mother worked harder to repay the debt while raising Jeremy. Fortunately, Jeremy was a bright kid who consistently earned scholarships. 

“I lost track of him after we graduated.” Stephen said, “I remember he didn’t go to college, which was a shame.”
