"Is there any trouble?"

Lorraine immediately hopped to her feet after hearing my familiar voice.

Though I had informed her over the phone that we'd get engaged today, she was completely unprepared. "Why are you here?"

She was still caught up in the whirlwind of emotions from what I had told her. She couldn't believe I was serious about wanting to marry her and skipping the whole dating phase.

I could see the emotions shifting across her face as it flushed and paled.

The two of us were standing in the middle of the hallway. No one could hear our conversation, but they could all see the changes in Lorraine's expression.

"Is Mr. Joplin mad at her?"

"It's not Lorraine's fault. It's just that Ms. Langley keeps rejecting everything."

I couldn't help finding their gossip amusing.

Lorraine's face was now completely flushed from her neck to her cheeks. I could barely resist a bite.

"Leave now if there isn't anything else you want to say." Sensing the mix of envious and sympathetic glances from the people around her, her face was now a deep shade of red.

"Don't forget to come tonight," I reminded her. How could there be an engagement without the future bride?

Lorraine trembled slightly when she realized I'd kneel on one knee and propose to her tonight. She couldn't stop herself from smiling at the thought.

She continued to think of me as I walked away, feeling as if she could hear my voice that was filled with warmth and laughter in her ears.
