Chapter 9 A Deep Bow

Cassie hadn’t expected Lindsey to be so aggressive. She froze for a moment before bursting into even louder sobs.

“You’re really going to push your sister to death, aren’t you? If it weren’t for the Oconnells, you wouldn’t have survived back then! Now you’re safe while your sister is crying, but you still refuse to back down? How can

you

be so vicious!”

Lindsey looked at Cassie with disappointment in her eyes.

She had once held on to a sliver of hope.

After all, she had called this woman “Mom” for so many years. Maybe. just maybe, the Oconnell family had at least some affection for her.

Even just a little bit.

Yet she just lost all her hopes.

She swallowed silently, but she still asked, “What if something had happened to me today? What if I had been assaulted?”

Cassie was stunned for a second before snapping, “But nothing did happen to you, right? So why can’t you just let it go? You’re the older sister. Can’t you give in to your little sister just once? Jaelyn didn’t mean to hurt you. She’s just sick! How can you be so petty, fussing over every little thing?”

Lindsey’s heart turned cold. “I’m only asking for an apology.”

“Fine! Fine!”

Cassie was shaking with rage as she shot a glare at Lindsey

“So ungrateful! We gave you everything, and this is how you repay us! You want an apology? Fine! I, your foster mother, apologize! I failed to raise a decent daughter. I’m sorry you were wronged! But Lindsey, if it weren’t for you, would my Jaelyn have ended up like this?”

Tears poured down her face as she clung to Jaelyn as though Jaelyn were the one wronged.

“You stole the place that should’ve belonged to my daughter and ruined. her life for years, yet you feel no gratitude or guilt at all! I must’ve been blind to take you in. Get out! Don’t ever show up in this house again! I’ll just pretend the Oconnell family never raised you. I never had a daughter like you!”

Lindsey pressed her lips together and stood there quietly.

Everyone around was watching. Now that Lindsey had been cast out, what could she possibly do to survive? She had nothing, after all!

But after standing her ground so firmly earlier, she couldn’t just lower her head and beg Cassie now.

Everyone in the room was waiting for Lindsey’s reaction.

Just as she was about to speak, Eliezer stepped forward and placed himself in front of her.

“Mrs. Oconnell, we understand Jaelyn’s condition is serious, but Lindsey was also deeply wronged just now. You can play favorites, but you can’t twist right and wrong. Besides, the Woodward and Oconnell families are in–laws. Lindsey is my wife. Cutting her off like this doesn’t seem appropriate for either family.”

“Mr. Woodward.”

From behind him, Lindsey spoke calmly. “If I remember correctly, we signed the divorce papers last night. Legally speaking, I’m no longer your

wife.”

Everyone in the room was already stunned that Eliezer would speak up for Lindsey, let alone hear what Lindsey had just said.

They were divorced?!

Even Jaelyn, who had been sobbing on the floor, froze at the news and looked up at Eliezer with unexpected hope.
