Chapter 2411

“Come on, you really believed that story about him being a lawyer from the Howard Group’s legal department? The Howard Group is a massive conglomerate, dealing with countless matters every day. It’s highly unlikely they would bother monitoring the statements of a small internet user! Just calm down; nothing will go wrong.”

Seren’s heart was unsettled despite Mara’s confident tone, feeling that this woman might not be entirely reliable.

“Are you sure everything will be fine, as you say? That guy seemed so sure, telling me to sign for a court subpoena and to get ready to hire a lawyer in case it’s for real. What if I actually have to go through with that? I don’t want to get tangled up in a lawsuit!”

The more Seren thought about it, the more frightened she became. She couldn’t understand how she had been so blinded to accept this woman’s task in the first place.

Her life hadn’t been a bed of roses before, but she’d never gotten into this kind of mess. What if she ended up in court, or worse, in prison? There goes her future, down the drain.

“Hey, you’re not just brushing me off, are you? Just so you know, I have evidence of our deal. If something goes wrong, don’t think you can just walk away scot-free.”

—

That was perhaps the only smart move Seren had made – not to trust Mara completely. Otherwise, she’d have been left holding the bag all by herself.

Mara rolled her eyes with disdain. This woman really didn’t know when she had it good.

“What’s this about? We had a deal. I paid you, and you did the job. What’s the problem now? I told you, if you did it my way, there would be no issues. Why did you take the money if you didn’t trust me? I bet you’ve nearly blown through all the cash on that card, haven’t you? I even gave you an extra 300 thousand. What more do you want? Could you make that much at a regular job? Don’t get greedy, honey.”

Seren felt a twinge of guilt; she really did need the thirty thousand Mara had given her.

“I’m not backing out. It’s just… this isn’t what you said it would be. Now I’ve got lawyers on my tail, and you think I’m gonna go to jail over this? You’ve got to help me figure this out. It won’t do either of us any good if I end up behind bars, right? If it weren’t for this mess, I wouldn’t be talking about court. I want us both to come out of this okay, so we can maybe work together again in the future.”

Mara felt irritated. People are never satisfied; they always crave more. Once bitten, twice shy – she wouldn’t partner with someone like this again. However, greedy people are easy to manipulate; a bit of money, and they’re ready to jump.

“Fine, I get what you’re worried about. If someone actually sues you, I’ll arrange a lawyer. But there’s one thing – don’t call me again before I contact you. If we must communicate, use a payphone, not your personal line.”
