Leo couldn’t believe how smooth the interrogation of Clara was going to be when Balfour assigned him the task. He had barely taken a seat across from her when Clara seemed ready to spill everything she knew. 

“You work for Balfour, don’t you? This mess isn’t my doing-I was set up! At worst, I’m an accessory to the crime, but I absolutely can’t go to jail. I’ve still got a bright future ahead of me.” 

Her impulsiveness caused the officer to firmly guide her back to her seat. 

“Weren’t you all full of bluster before? Going on and on about not caring for your future, ready to go down with Ivy. Did we hear you wrong?” 

The threats Clara had made when she had kidnapped Ivy were those of someone with nothing to lose, but now she seemed desperate to cling to life. 

Clara snapped back, “I’ve had an epiphany. Why should I take the fall for something I didn’t do? I was a scapegoat, and I refuse to sit back and accept my fate. If there’s a chance for me to turn things around, I won’t let myself be tied down here.” 

Leo smirked. This woman’s ability to spin yarns was truly something, devoid of any logic. 

One minute she was taking full responsibility, and she was claiming she was just a pawn the next. It was hard to tell what was truth and what was fiction in her tale. 

“If you’re saying someone else put you up to this, who would that be? Do you have any evidence? Without it, everything you’re saying was futile.” 

“Who else in this world hates Ivy more than Mara? She’s the one who approached me. I hesitated because, after all, Ivy is my half-sister. But Mara convinced me that once Ivy was out of the picture, I could make a comeback.” 

Of course, Clara wasn’t foolish enough to take Mara’s word as gospel. She had her evidence. Leaning forward, she teased, “You know, I stumbled upon something quite interesting. I wonder if your boss is aware of it” 

Leo couldn’t help but ask, “What?” 

“Ha, you’re not privy to that information. If you want to know, get Balfour himself to come 

here.” 

Leo scoffed. Everyone wanted a piece of their boss, but the man wasn’t available for just 

anyone. 

“Ms. Dunhill, it’s not realistic for you to meet my boss with your status.” 

Despite the mockery, Clara wasn’t offended. She simply told him, “Just let your boss know it’s about his ‘old flame’. He’ll come to see me. Let’s wait and see.”
