Ivy’s words were preposterous, and Mara let out a scornful laugh, “Do you take me for an idiot? You expect me to just swallow whatever tale you spin? Even if I were a fool, Victoria wasn’t. If I was out to poison her, why on earth would she obediently eat anything I made? What a joke. Ivy, you might be an actress, but please spare me the melodrama meant to prove her deep affection for me. It’s a wasted effort.” 

Ivy looked down at Mara with a pitying expression that really got under her skin, “There’s something else you should know. Haven’t you always been indignant that there’s a huge difference between the two of you, despite the fact that you and Victoria were blood? She was the belle of the ball, and you were just… ordinary. Academics came to her as easily as breathing, while you struggled. Haven’t you ever wondered why?” 

Mara didn’t hesitate with her response, “Why? Because she loved showing off and being the center of attention. None of you have the right to speak forgiveness on my behalf.” 

Ivy actually laughed, “It’s a shame, really. Victoria did so much for you, and in the end, she couldn’t even get a word of gratitude. Was it worth it?”
