Someone chimed in, “Why would Emily, who could easily afford her own necklace, steal yours?” 

Hazel had no good answer to that. She shot back, “Why don’t you ask her? She’s the one who stole it and won’t admit it!” 

Hearing this, Emily decided it was time to stop holding back. Crossing her arms, she spoke firmly, “Hazel, I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, but I guess we’re done here since you’re still blaming me. You’re saying the necklace disappeared after I was in your room last night, right?” 

Hazel hesitated under Emily’s steady stare. The truth was, the necklace wasn’t missing–she’d hidden it herself, hoping to guilt Emily into helping her. If only Emily had gone along with it, Hazel wouldn’t have had to push this far. 

“Yeah,” Hazel finally answered, though her confidence was fading. 

Emily raised an eyebrow. “Okay, so did it go missing while I was still wearing it or after I left?” 

“After you left, of course!” Hazel insisted, trying to sound confident, 

Emily could hardly believe how naive Hazel was being. Staying calm, she replied, “Funny,
