Not only had Noah lost the company, but he had also somehow managed to piss off Finley. He had come today hoping to get Samantha’s help, but instead, he had offended Finley. The whole d*mn situation was spiraling into a nightmare. 

Panicking, he scrambled for an explanation. “Listen, Sam’s face looks like this because she tried to hit me, and I dodged. That’s when she ended up messing up her own face. This has nothing to do with me! She brought this on herself.” 

“Brought it on herself?” 

Oh sh*t, did I just screw that up? He quickly backpedaled. What I meant was that she got hurt all on her own! It’s not my fault, Mr. Dean; you can’t pin this on me for what Samantha did to herself. I’m not taking the fall for this!” 

His desperate words only made Finley’s grip tighten. 

“You’re asking for it, Noah. I don’t give a d*mn why Sam’s face looks like this. When I left, she was fine. Now that I’m back, she’s in this state because of you. So, tell me–how should I make you pay for what you’ve done to her?” 

Am I not the one who’s been wronged? 

Gasping for air as Finley’s grip on him tightened, Noah protested, “I swear, I didn’t hit her! It was Sam who hit me! If you don’t believe me, just ask her!” 

But Finley’s icy glare remained unyielding, sending chills down Noah’s spine. He glanced over at Samantha, who lay silently on the hospital bed, doing nothing to defend him. 

“Samantha, I’m being wrongly accused because of you! Finley’s about to kill me, and you’re just lying there! Why won’t you speak up for me?” 

Honestly, it would be better if Finley choked him out right now. After all, he really hit me–so why should I bother helping him to explain anything? 

She covered her face like a delicate flower, teetering on the edge of wilting. “Finley, my face hurts so much. Do you think it will be scarred? If it is, will I end up hideous? Unbearably ugly?” 

Noah was so infuriated by her dramatics that he nearly choked on his rage. Her face had only a minor bruise–nothing else was amiss—and yet she had the audacity to claim she might be disfigured? 

“You’re doing this deliberately! Look at your face–it’s perfectly fine! You’re just trying to get Finley to choke me to death, aren’t you?”
