Durand was also a former military man himself. Having served under Mr. Davier for so many years, Durand had definitely experienced quite a lot.
It was due to his experience that he was able to calm down.
In a deep voice, he said, “We can't turn back. It's like you've said, Ms. Davier. Nathan is definitely not going to let you off the hook.”
“However, even if we were to defy them and make a run for Brimmopolis, it wouldn't work either.”
“The two fighter jets were ordered to take action. As such, they will have no qualms about shooting us down. After all, that's a military order.”
Phoebe was still behaving like a scalded cat. “So what the heck are we supposed to do if we can't continue flying or turn back?
Just then, something connected in Durand's head as he suddenly thought of a way out of this mess.
“I've got it!” said Durand excitedly.
“Well? Spit it out!”
“We'll just pretend to turn back.”
Phoebe and others were stunned. “What do you mean 'pretend' to turn back?”
Durand smiled. “We're currently still within the borders of the South, but no longer in the vicinity of Channing.” “I think we can agree to turn back. But on the way back, we should turn off one of the engines and claim that we've had an accident. I don't know, say we've hit a bird or something. The impact would have damaged the engine, so we can't possibly fly back to Channing in this state.”
Phoebe's eyes widened, her gaze a mix of hope and anxiety. “An emergency landing? Here?”
Durand nodded. “We'll land in the South, at the Alberesque Airport specifically.”
“The current commander-in-chief of the
Alberesque District is General Vadim Normandy, who just sworn into office. He is a protege of Mr. Davier.”
“Let's contact him in advance. He will definitely not let anything happen to you, and he will protect you if you're landed safely within his boundaries. After that, we'll be able to have a smooth trip back to Brimmopolis.”
“Well, we'll go with your suggestion then, Durand,” said Phoebe excitedly. “Let's hope this works.”
Meanwhile, at the military base in Channing city, Nathan, and General Wilson were sitting down for a cup of tea.
“However, she didn't have the gall to continue on to Brimmopolis and chose the safer option of landing in Alberesque instead.
“If I remember correctly, Vadim Normandy, the commander-in-chief of the military region, was just sworn in quite recently. He is a protege of Mr. Davier.”
“I'm assuming that this is a last-ditch effort to plead for asylum and escape whatever judgement that awaits her.”
Nathan nodded. “Yes, I was more or less thinking the same thing.”
“Shoot them down now or let them land in Alberesque—I'll leave that decision to you.” With that, General Wilson finished what he had to say.
Nathan mulled over the current situation for a bit before making a decision. “If she insists on going her own way, I couldn't care less if you shot her down.”
“However, if I shoot her down now, it'll reflect poorly on me. Since her claims of returning and the plane malfunction are on the record, I cannot just attack her like that.”
Nathan paused again and sneered. “Well, let her land there.”
“If she thinks Vadim Normandy can protect her, she's sorely mistaken.”
