Penny stood by the window in the Cross Group chairman's office, clad in a simple but elegant suit.
She looked into the distance with a forlorn look on her face as dark clouds gathered and lightning struck.
Similarly, a storm was raging in Penny's heart as her mind wandered to her husband Nathan.
News of the victory against Xyperia was already two weeks old, but Nathan had yet to send word back home.
Penny was beyond anxious as time ticked away.
Shouldn't he have called home by now? Isn't the war over?lt's been close to a month since the victory... what if something had happened to him!
Fear gripped her heart the moment she thought about that.
She picked up her phone and dialed Nathan's number for the millionth time, only for a robotic voice to remind her yet again that his phone was turned off.
Unbeknownst to her, Nathan had been using an exclusive phone number given to him by the country, rather than his own phone number.
She was also kept in the dark about his poisoning and the awards ceremony back in Brimmopolis, which were the reasons why he could not contact his family for the past few weeks.
Suddenly, Jenny knocked on the door to her office. “Chairman?”
“Yes?” Penny answered with a start.
“A gentleman by the name of Webb Goldstein from the Goldstein family of Brimmopolis just barged into the office with his men,” Jenny reported. “He says that he wants to meet you.”
The Goldstein family?
Penny recalled how Clifford's ex-wife Gillian had been from the Goldstein family, and she knew about Nathan's rivalry with the Daviers and the Goldsteins. She could not help but frown when she heard the name. “Why would they even come here? Tell them that I don't have time to entertain their nonsense.”
The man adjusted his glasses and smiled. “That's right. Nice to meet you, Ms. Smith. I'm Webb Goldstein, heir to the Goldstein family.”
As he spoke, Ava, Jenny and a group of security guards rushed into the room.
“Chairman!” Jenny exclaimed, sweating all over. “I'm so sorry! We couldn't keep him out of the office! I've already called security!”
The security guards surrounded Webb and his men with stern expressions on their faces.
Ava walked over to Penny's side and whispered, “Mrs. Cross, would you like me to throw them
onto the streets?”
“No need,” Penny said calmly. “Just tell them to leave nicely.”
Ava glared at Webb and his men and growled, “Would you like to get out on your own, or would you like me to throw you out like the trash?”
