Making a show of 'berating' his family, Sean then turned to smile at Nathan and Penny, "Nathan, Penny, your uncles were rather unreasonable in their requests. I hope you two won't take it to heart.”
Nathan stared back at him, wondering what the sly, old fox was up to this time.
Penny hurriedly assured, "Of course not. I'm just happy you can understand where we're coming from."
"Yes, yes," Sean chuckled as he continued, "Of course I understand."
With that, he stood up and prepared to leave.
However, when he reached the front door, he abruptly stopped moving as if he had just remembered something. Turning his head around to look at Penny, he queried, "Oh, by the way, I heard your pharmaceutical company is looking to build a factory. Is that right?"
Nodding her head, Penny replied, "Yeah. Unfortunately, we've yet to find a suitable location. Either the price is too high or the place is too small."
A smile crossed the old man's face as he offered, "The Smiths bought a plot of land last year at Phoenix; it's roughly one thousand acres or so. All the necessary documents have already been filed. If you want that land, we can sell it off to you."
Her face lit up with surprised joy as she exclaimed, "Phoenix? That's perfect! Grandpa, how much will you be willing to sell it to me for?"
"The other plots of land you were looking at were quite expensive, weren't they?"
"Yes, most of them wanted at least 1.5 million and above for quite a small plot of land."
Smiling widely, Sean said, "Well, we're family so I won't sell it to you at such a high price. How does 1 billion for the whole thousand acres sound?"
"The documents were all filed, yes, but the government designated that area as an ecological reserve two years ago. We're not allowed to develop that land," Helena explained.
Penny's body trembled as she croaked out, "What?"
Sounding close to tears, the manager answered, "I only just found out the Smiths had been tricked into buying that land for 800 million. It was only after they bought it that they realized they had been scammed. Unable to develop it, they just left it there."
For a moment, the world spun around her. Her grandfather had obviously known the land could not be developed, yet he had still sold it to her. This was a deliberate attempt to set her up.
One billion, down the drain.
As she lost herself in her despair, Nathan walked in with a thermal container.
