Chapter 40 

Tharely got a word in before his wolf features appeared. A small smile popped on my face when I laid eyes on his tail and fangs. 

“Well this is a surprise.” I smiled, a teasing edge in my voice. 

Haelor cleared his throat, a look of embarrassment in his eyes. I wasn’t about to let this chance go by. 

“I’ve never seen your tail before in human form.” I slowly drawled the words, catching him by surprise when I grabbed his tail and examined it, 

It was hard to miss how his body stiffened as I ran my fingers down the length. Haclor’s face went as red as a tomato when my hand lightly grazed his 

What kind of people were around you back at the barracks?” I asked, letting go of his tail. 

“What do you mean?” He asked, the blush still evident on his face. 

I shrugged. “I just find it surprising how you’re still so shy after all this time.” 

“It’s not what you think.” He said without hesitation. “I’ve never touched other female wolves or talked to them. To be honest, the only woman I like talking to is you.” 

My eyes widened. “Really?” 

“Yes,” He nodded. “In fact, I–I wanted to be friends with you.” 

There was a barely visible hint of sadness in his eyes as he said those words. It made me wondered if there was something wrong with admitting theth 

“I feel exactly the same.” I smiled. 

Just as I opened my mouth to speak, the door swung open to reveal Quentin. He pushed his way in, not bothering about the courtesy of knocking. 

As soon as he saw me sitting in the arms of a topless Haelor, his frown immediately deepened. For a while, he didn’t say anything, just alternated between looking at Haelor and then at me. 

After a while, he let out a small scoff, his eyes fixed on Haelor. “Enjoy taking care of your body.” 

The taunt in his voice was very clear. When it came to size, Haelor was obviously the stronger Alpha. 

Without saying a word, he protectively wrapped his arms around my waist. I resisted the urge to squeal, feeling the warmth of his arms around me. 

“I could say the same to you, but I doubt there’s a lot of work that can be done.” Haelor retorted. 

Quentin looked enraged but that didn’t faze Haelor one bit. Haelor’s eyes remained fixed on him as he went on. 

“Say all you want but I refuse to let you be rude to Melanie.” 

That was when I’d met Jack. Jack who’d been all too open, willing to listen to me vent and try to help with my problems as best as he could. 

That was where I’d slipped up. I’d let him take advantage of that, not realizing he was slowly wrapping his tendrils around me until it was too late. 

The tension in the air seemed to get thicker with each passing second. There wasn’t a single sliver of amusement in Haelor’s eyes as he stared Quentin down. 

I held my breath, for fear of what would break out at any moment. The door sliding open broke the tension just a little. 

Lucian appeared in the doorway, a puzzled look in his eyes as he watched all of us carefully. Shutting the door behind him, he walked into the room. 

“What’s going on?” He asked, turning his attention between Haelor and Quentin. 

“I was just about to find out the same thing.” Quentin spoke first, his eyes narrowing do. 

“Lucian.” Haelor nodded his head to my brother before turning Quentin. “I believe you were just leaving, no?”
