Footsteps could be heard coming from the door before Evelyn could finish her sentence.
Then, a deep man's voice rang out, cutting Evelyn off. "I'm not late, am I, my dear wife?"
Evelyn turned around in disbelief, thinking that her ears were playing tricks on her.
Everyone else looked in the direction of the voice in shock as well.
Lucas walked in slowly.
Blake subconsciously furrowed his brow after he saw Lucas arrive. He was a little surprised that Lucas would refer to Evelyn as his dear wife in front of everybody.
However, after he gave it another thought, he figured that everybody present was from the Reed family. Lucas was only willing to put on an act and admit that Evelyn was his wife when there were no outsiders.
If there was anybody who didn't know they were married, he would never have referred to Evelyn as his wife.
Lucas was in a plain black suit, and his tall, slender figure got closer and closer as he walked in. He glanced at Evelyn after he walked through the door and said calmly to Deborah, "I got caught up with work at the office. I'm sorry, Granny."
Evelyn's gaze darkened a little. She had almost lost her composure altogether after he called her his wife in such a casual tone.
She was more shocked by the way he addressed her than the fact that he showed up at all.
What on earth was Lucas playing at? Why would he play along to such an extent?
They had been married for years, but he had never once called her his wife.
Besides, Evelyn already accepted the fact that Lucas was accompanying Millie and Tiffany. Why did he suddenly come over?
She subconsciously snuck a glance at his tie.
It was not the tie with the red pattern that Tiffany posted. It was a black tie instead, which was suited for the solemn ceremony that day.
She was stumped, and her brow furrowed even tighter.
Lucas looked at her and asked casually, "What's the matter?"
Only then did Evelyn realize that she was looking at Lucas strangely. Deborah and Leonard were looking at her at that moment, so she had no choice but to change the topic. "Where did you come from?" she asked.
"The office," Lucas replied.
Evelyn did not believe him, but she did not plan to press further as it was not appropriate, given their relationship.
Deborah's expression softened. She did not scold Lucas. Instead, she waved and said, "It's fine as long as you're here. Let's start the ceremony."
That meant that Lucas was already on his way then.
Lucas looked at him calmly and said, "Family comes first."
Family? That word rang in Blake's ears. He was surprised by how much of an act Lucas could put on. He was clearly reluctant to be here, yet he could always act like it did not bother him at all.
Deborah was in a good mood. "Evie, Lucas, go and light a candle for Naomi together."
Evelyn looked at the man next to her with hesitation. She was not sure if Lucas was willing to play along with her.
Lucas noticed her gaze but said nothing. He went ahead and lit a candle and bowed his head in silence, showing his utmost respect. He did not show any signs that he was just putting on a show.
Evelyn was a little dazed, but she quickly came to her senses and followed suit.
She felt so mournful when she lit the candle for her mother that tears started to well up in her eyes.
However, she was not the type who would let her emotions show. She bowed her head in silence for a long time, not letting anybody notice her teary eyes.
Then, she saw a piece of tissue being handed to her.
