All Annalise needed was for Steven to tell her that he was waiting on Jessica, and she would give up on him. Yet, Steven was afraid that Jessica was lying to him, so he lied to Annalise.

Steven told Annalise that he had not developed feelings for anyone else but simply needed time to think about what he wanted. Annalise took his word for it and began to pursue him.

At that thought, Steven was overwhelmed with regret. He wondered why he hadn't been honest—that way, Annalise wouldn't have to suffer so much.
